The battle to save an old building threatens to destroy the family who owns it.
Property developer Leslie Henderson wants to demolish a quirky 1940s building and erect a modern office block in its place. But the building happens to be occupied by R&P Labs, and now its staff members face their biggest challenge yet. Mitch has an explosive evening, Phil hits a rocky patch and Virginia finally gets a piece of the action as the five scientific sleuths race the wrecker's ball to uncover a secret that will rip a family apart and cost two people their lives.
Excerpt
The following morning saw the R&P staff gathered at the coffeemaker, ready for battle. Ellis had a printout of Sly’s most recent research clutched in his hand. Mitch had cleaned up his war wounds, and now was loudly plotting various forms of revenge. Phil had taken the samples of dirt Rob had collected the night before, promising to analyze them as soon as possible. Virginia’s blue eyes were snapping with anger, and Rob deduced she wasn’t planning to retire any time soon, which was the only good news he could detect in the situation.
“Good thing you run fast,” Phil said to Mitch. “Otherwise you would have been right on top of that thing when she blew, and we’d be looking for another bacteriologist.”
“I knew I could count on you guys for sympathy.” Mitch shifted his attention to Ellis. “Go on, Ellis, I can tell you’re dying to get your two cents’ worth in. Tell me what a jerk I was not to catch him.”
Ellis looked up from his papers. “I will only remind you that you said you weren’t dumb enough to take on a homicidal nutcase just before your wedding. You might want to re-think that.”
Mitch flipped an insulting finger at him.
“It’s not Mitch’s fault; he could hardly have anticipated that explosion,” Virginia said. “It’s just fortunate he wasn’t injured more seriously. And of course they weren’t targeting him deliberately; in fact, they probably weren’t expecting anyone to be there at all.”
“So there,” Mitch said. “It wasn’t my fault. I’m just glad I decided to chase that dude instead of stopping to look at his handiwork.”
“What did Catherine say when you turned up looking like you’d been wrestling a porcupine?” Phil asked.
“Not a lot,” Mitch admitted. “Listen, forget about me, and let’s find out what was in that hole.”
