Excerpt
The sun was shining through the bedroom curtains when Zukie woke up. She lay there, thinking, and then turned her head to look at the clock.
“Oh, no, look at the time. Lou will want breakfast.” With an effort, she pushed the covers back and stood up, wobbling a little.
She opened the bedroom door and the smell from the kitchen told her she’d missed her cue. Coffee, toast, and if she wasn’t mistaken, bacon. She congratulated herself on teaching Lou some basic cooking skills after he’d moved in – before she’d taken him in hand, he probably would have set the kitchen on fire just making toast.
She staggered out to the kitchen and found Lou calmly eating his breakfast. Zukie felt redundant. For his part, Lou took in the bleary-eyed, wild-haired apparition in the archway and nodded toward the counter.
“There’s coffee if you want it. Did you get some sleep?”
