Zukie came out from behind the table and grasped his elbow, steering him toward a quieter section of the hall. Jim Lanigan wasn’t worried. He had known Zukie for more than a year and was contemplating the possibility of acquiring her as a mother-in-law. The thought alarmed him, but not as much as the prospect of what she would do to him if he didn’t propose to her daughter Carol before long.
“What’s up?” he asked her.
“Is Carol here with you?”
“No, but she said she’d meet me here a little later. We might drop by the house this evening if you’ve got some coffee and Christmas cookies going.”
“You know I always do. But right now, I need to talk to you alone. I know you’re not on duty, but can you put your cop hat on for a minute?”
Lanigan surveyed her. At first glance, Zukie was not a particularly impressive woman. She was unfashionable, slightly overweight and rapidly approaching sixty. But her brown eyes under a thatch of wiry salt and pepper hair were sharp, and Lanigan had learned the hard way not to underestimate her intelligence.
“OK, consider it on. Please don’t tell me you’ve stumbled over another dead body.”
“Nope, nothing like that.”
