Zukie came round to the smell of smoke and her first thought was that she must be dead and that Sister Mary Joseph had been right when she predicted Zukie would go to hell for being such a naughty little girl.
Then reality kicked in and she realized what she could smell was cigarette smoke, about a foot from her face. She opened her eyes and saw Cherry crouched beside her, her bulldog face a picture of concern. The eternal cigarette smoldered in a corner of her mouth.
“Jeez, thank God you’re OK,” Cherry said. “I mean, I know you took quite a knock so you’re not really OK, but at first I thought you were dead, seeing you all slumped over there.”
“Yeah, me, too,” Zukie admitted. “I must have blacked out for a little while and I hurt all over.” Lou’s words about losing an arm or leg came back to her and she did a hasty count to make sure she still had the correct number. “How’d you happen to be here?”
