Zukie openly watched, and as soon as Shelly shuffled sleepily into view, Zukie was out the front door and heading for her neighbor’s house.
I should have brought the coffeepot with me, she thought, as she knocked on the front door. I can’t expect Shelly to think clearly this early in the morning with that stuff she calls coffee.
“Good grief, Zukie,” Shelly said, opening the door. “It’s only … what time is it, anyway?”
“Seven-thirty.”
“Where’s the fire?”
“It’s worse than that.”
“Really? That sounds promising. Come on in and tell me what’s wrong.”
Zukie stepped gingerly inside and followed Shelly to the kitchen.
“You won’t believe what happened at the rehearsal last night, Shelly.”
“When you’re involved, I’d believe anything. Who got murdered?”
Zukie blinked in confusion, then said indignantly, “You must have already heard.”
It was Shelly’s turn stare blankly. “Heard what? Oh, my God, Zukie. Sit down.”
Zukie sank onto a chair, and Shelly regarded her with concern.
“You look terrible. The wedding’s not off, is it?”
