When the past won't stay buried ...
Twenty years ago, Gus Novak committed a crime and fled the country, only to die in the Mexican desert. But Zukie Merlino thinks she's just seen him on a downtown Seattle street, and being perpetually curious, she wants to know what he -- or his ghost -- is doing there. With her cousin Lou temporarily sidelined she's on her own, but whether it's tracking down Novak's ghost or dealing with a more personal crisis, you can count on Zukie to deliver the goods.
'Zukie's Ghost ' was the mystery/suspense category winner in the 2018 eFestival for Words Awards for independent e-books.
Excerpt
Zukie turned and started back toward the house, trying not to limp too noticeably. Halfway there, she nearly ran into Matt, who said, “There you are. Are you all right, Zukie?”
“Not so as you’d notice. Someone threw another rock and it hit me. Could be they were aiming at the car again or were going to chuck it through the window of the house, but when I came out I made a better target. So I chased them and caught them but they got away. Did you see anything?”
“No, Shelly and I didn’t know anything had happened until Lou phoned and said you’d gone out to move your car and the car was still there with the door open but you weren’t anywhere in sight. He asked if I’d mind taking a look.”
“Well, thanks for coming out and looking for me, Matt. I’m OK, really.”
“If you’re sure. I’ll walk back with you and I’m not leaving until you’re inside the house.”
Zukie was secretly glad Matt was beside her as she returned to the house. Lou opened the door and almost yanked her inside.
“Thanks, Matt.”
“No problem.”
Lou shut the door and said, “What the hell happened out there?”
Zukie gave him a brief account of her last few minutes’ activity, ending with, “It was a girl, Lou, or a youngish woman. I could smell perfume and you know women kind of feel different.”
“Yeah, I seem to remember that. So who was she?”
