To be perfectly honest about it, Halloween was not one of Zukie Merlino’s favorite holidays.
It seemed to start in early September, when aisle upon aisle of packaged sweet treats appeared in the supermarket, to be followed by racks of outlandish costumes and piles of pumpkins. Zukie had nothing against pumpkins, especially if they were encased in pie crust and served with whipped cream, but half of these weren’t even real, being made of ceramic, plastic or some other artificial material.
Zukie refused to decorate her house with fake pumpkins and given the mess involved, she declined to carve a jack o’lantern from a real one, either. It was bad enough that weeks later, when the night itself rolled around, she would be obliged to answer the door to a horde of greedy little monsters holding out bags and expecting a handout.
The last straw had been when the occupants of one of the houses in her block had decided to drape their porch in orange lights, presumably to light the way for trick or treaters. Zukie was only thankful her bedroom was at the back of her own house, so she didn’t have to be kept awake by the orange glow.
She had been tempted to ignore Halloween altogether, but she suspected that would be asking for trouble, and in Zukie’s life, enough trouble came along without inviting more. So she bought a couple of bags of small candy bars, and on the last evening of October, she turned the porch light on and waited.
