Why were so many people trying to get their hands on a derelict piece of land?
Another mystery for Jacob Silver and Sarah Simm.
Businessman Hector Kirby had ambitious plans for a derelict piece of land along the River Windrush, but the current residents were determined to stop him.So was the person who had hidden something there that was never meant to be discovered. As a rare summer heatwave envelopes Oxfordshire, the local police once again enlist the help of clock repairer Jacob Silver and his wife Sarah in an effort to find who has been stung into action by Kirby's plan.
Excerpt
Gracie came into the kitchen and Jacob gave her a warm smile.
“Oh, are you stopping for tea, Mr Silver?”
“No, I’m afraid not.”
“What a pity.”
“Yes, but I’ve finished my work and Sarah will be expecting me back.”
Gracie started to speak, darted a glance at the cook and fell silent. Jacob wondered what she had been about to say, but there were too many pairs of ears about for him to ask. Another maid appeared, picked up the plates of cake and sandwiches and carried them out. Gracie took a second tray, this one loaded with tea cups and saucers, a milk jug and sugar bowl, and followed her.
Jacob was debating whether to have someone inform the family that he had completed the clock repair when Gracie came back. She placed the large teapot on a tray and started to go through the baize door, only to nearly collide with the other maid, who was hurrying back.
“Miss Amelia doesn’t fancy sandwiches or cake,” she said. “She’d like just bread and butter, please, and perhaps some honey with it?”
“She can have bread and butter,” the cook said, “but she’ll have to make do with jam today. We’ve used up the last of the honey and that boy’s not turned up with the new jars I asked him for.”
It seemed an innocuous enough statement, but Jacob saw Gracie’s face grow pale as if she had heard something shocking. He dropped his hat and leaped forward just in time to catch the tray as it tilted dangerously, grabbing the handle of the teapot with his other hand.
“What on earth’s the matter with you, Gracie?” demanded the cook.
