“I wonder what his good news could be,” Sarah said. “Perhaps a relative has died and left him some money.”
“Possibly. He seemed slightly embarrassed, however, and I don’t think inheriting money should embarrass him.”
Sarah put her head to one side, her habitual pose when thinking hard. “A lady friend. That’s what it is.”
“Do you think so?”
Jacob was doubtful, since Clarke had never seemed to be interested in any of the eligible women in Witney who wouldn’t have minded being courted by a man with a lucrative business and a cheerful personality. In fact, two years earlier he had been aggressively pursued by one of them, who had taken rejection badly. At the time, he had confided to Jacob that he had simply never met anyone he wanted to marry, and seemed content with his solitary life.
“Oh, arr,” Sarah said, using the local phrase that could mean just about anything, depending on the circumstances. “He must be a bit lonely, don’t you think, and maybe he’s met a nice lady. A man his age – he needs someone to look after him.”
“You could be right.”
“And the good news – maybe he’s planning to ask her to marry him and is sure she’ll accept. Maybe he has already asked her.”
“Possibly, but there’s a flaw in that, Sarah. If he was courting anyone and it had got to the point of marriage being mentioned, all of Witney would know about it. You know no one can do anything here without it becoming common knowledge. And everyone knows Albie Clark.”
