Riots, revolution, invasion, this island boy thought he had experienced everything, that is until he migrated to the Kentucky mountains. Blacks, he could not understand, whites, well that mountain twang was another language to him. From state to state, big city to little towns being slapped by culture shock as he tries to assimilate.

A young man moves to America on a basketball scholarship landing at The College of the Kentucky Mountains. He is faced with being a minority for the first time. He tries to find in but finds the different culture hard to navigate. He falls in love and marries a coal miners daughter, his life spins into a world of dealing with rednecks, hillbillies and homeboys.

Excerpt

Bob Marley lyrics exploded in my head, “Emancipate yourself from mental slavery none but ourselves can free our minds”. I swallowed hard, trying to stop myself from throwing up. Then another quote ran through my mind. It was the Karl Marx statement “Everyone is a victim of the system.” I wanted to be that body, feel free, no political system to tell me what to do, no religion to watch my every move. At that moment, feeling nothing would have been like paradise.
