Excerpt
Lani was awoken by a crash of thunder, it's vibrations shaking the house like a low grumble. Her father had pointed out the storm clouds earlier, pointing to the south before he called her and her brother in for dinner.
"There's a storm coming Lani." He said, crouching down beside her and her bike. "See those clouds, they're rain clouds."
Lani could see the gray and black clouds looming over the distant houses like an approaching doom. Her stomach twisted uneasily and she felt a twinge of fear.
Jake, her fearless younger brother, was more than enthusiastic about the oncoming storm. "Can we watch the lightning?" He asked, riding his red bike around them in a circle. "Can we? Can we? Can we? Do you think it'll be a tornado Dad? Or a hurricane?"
Their dad laughed and shook his head. "No, just rain I'm afraid."
I'm afraid...I'm afraid...I'm afraid....
The remnants of her dream still echoed in her head from being awakened so suddenly and with a jolt. Her room was dark except for her nightlight on the other side of the room, casting a long eerie shadow of her doll house and family of plastic dolls against the wall.
Lightning bolted across the black stormy sky, filling her room with a flash of light. Everything became clear for just a second, everything wasn't so dark and frightening anymore. But just as quick as it came, it was gone and so was her relief.
The house seemed to creak more than usual and all the eyes of her beloved toys seemed to stare at her. Lani looked back at them, not afraid of her stuffed friends but wanting to know what they knew that she didn't. Their eyes seemed panicked in the dim light of her bedroom and as black as the sky outside.
Now Lani felt scared. She felt as if something bad was just outside her door. She heard the creaking and popping of her home, as if it was cracking it's knuckles, and immediately wanted to dive under her covers and hide until morning. She knew nothing would get her, she knew it was all in her head because she gets nervous during thunderstorms.
Your parents are just down the hallway...she chanted inside her head, slowly pulling the covers upwards, starring into the eyes of her toys as she did. Then she heard it. A scream mingled in with a growl of ferocious room shaking thunder.
Jake! She has only heard him scream like that once. It was when he got his leg stuck under the riding lawn mower at their Bumpa's. Lani had accidentally pressed a button while sitting up there after her Bumpa went inside to answer the phone. She didn't even know what she did until she felt the mower jerk to life and back up onto her brother's left leg. Then she heard him scream in such agony, she could never get that scream out of her head.
He was just inspecting an ant hill when she ran over and cracked the bone in his leg. It was all her fault. She hurt her brother. She has to protect him. He's screaming!
Lani instinctively grabbed her favorite stuffed animal, her stuffed unicorn with a grumpy face named Sour Puss, and threw off her covers as lightning filled the room once again with a bright light.
She had to save him!!
