Paranormal tomance/ Shifters. I'm hooked
I'm not one to read paranormal romance or any kind of paranormal books--this was my first, and I'm so glad I picked it up! Firstly, I've never read or heard of shifters. Pardon my ignorance, but I'll be reading more about them, guaranteed!
Elizabeth has spent her life in hospitals, fighting cancer, now she has been deemed "in remission." Her military father, "the General" has offered her the position of head researcher of a team assigned to study the shifters who seem to never get ill or have disease. Why? What keeps them so hearty, and how can the human race benefit? Elizabeth is excited and hopeful that she will find the cure for the cancer that chases her and others. She gathers her research team and sets out to discover the answers to the questions set before her only to find that the shifter clans aren't so willing to cooperate. This of course infuriates her father, and now he will get the answers through more forceful and cunning methods. Elizabeth is appalled by the tactics put in place and devises a plan to thwart her father's scheme.
Martin is a shifter (bear). He is desperate for love. Everyone around him seems to be finding the love of their lives and marrying. No him, until he goes on a mission to rescue those who have been taken. During the mission, he comes upon the lovely and helpless Elizabeth. He senses that she is not well, but what's more, his instant feelings for this human are undeniable.
Can Martin and Elizabeth find love? Can the shifters help Elizabeth regain her health or will her father destroy them all?
Paranormal...shifters...romance--I might just be hooked! Tamara Hoffa writes so smoothly that you find yourself immersed in her story, unable to put the book (or kindle) down, falling fast for these Bears/shifters, while waiting with baited breath for the next installment of the Animal in Me Series. 5 STARS!
Good shofter book with military angle
Bear Hearts is the second book in the Animal in Me series. I haven’t read the first book, but I didn’t feel like I was missing any information. The premise drew me to this book. It is different than many shifter romances because of the science element. It is hard for me to rate this book. There was a lot a liked about it, but also a lot I didn’t like about it.
Dr. Elizabeth Montrose is dying of cancer. Her father, an army general, hires her to head the civilian branch of a secret research mission—learn about shifter immunity and DNA. Asking the shifters for samples didn’t work, so the army kidnaps shifter children to get the research started.
Of course, kidnapping shifter children is a really bad idea, right? The bear shifters see these scientists as their enemies. They’d closely guarded their shifter secrets fearing something like this would happen. When bear shifter Mark smells Elizabeth for the first time he knows that she is meant to be his mate. Can he trust her? Fate has given him a hard blow. Will it be possible for him to love the enemy?
Let’s start with what I liked. The army element was really realistic. As much as the general was in the book I thought he was well developed. The science surrounding the shifter research was well written and easy to understand. Elizabeth made this book work. She was the glue that held it together.
Now for what didn’t work. The romance didn’t start until a third of the way into the book and it was slow to develop. While this worked with the storyline it didn’t satisfy my need for romance. The writing was distant and telling. I would have liked to have felt closer to the characters. Also, when the action started a lot happened off page. That was really disappointing. This book had a very good premise but only decent execution.
Shifting brilliance
It felt like I had waited forever for this book to come out but in reality I only waited a few months. I was that excited to read after reading the first book 'Hers to Bear' in this fantastic series.
If you haven't read book one have no fear, I believe after reading book two you could read it as a standalone as the Author explains in the first thirty percent of this book what happened at the end of book one.
If you are like me though, you will want to read everything from the beginning.
The story tells us about Martin and Elizabeth. Martin being the shifter and Elizabeth being his intended mate who he has been waiting hundreds of years for. Unfortunately Elizabeth is sick, she believes she really doesn't have long left to live and Martin not fully trusting Elizabeth after everything that has happened makes for a very tricky mating.
Elizabeth is seen as the bad person but that woman has battled her whole life and deserves to be happy. Only Martin can give her that happiness.
Everyone in the shifter community obviously knows who Elizabeth really is and its like one giant family of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews. Martin has the full support of his leader.
Elizabeth's father however has other ideas and wants her back home. Anybody that knows about shifters and their mates knows never to mess with the intended mate because the protection is fierce. Oh God Martin is so hot and loveable. I love to read about shifters. This book was just right up my street. If you love paranormal books, especially about shifters, this is the book for you.
