A nostalgic memoir of a love story set on a college campus in the early 1970’s.
Three chance encounters between a man broken by loneliness and a girl whose past includes sexual exploitation; lead to a relationship filled with romance, passion, betrayal and redemption. Freed from the bondage of his solitude, the man gives his love unselfishly and unconditionally. Freed from the shame of her past, for the first time in her life the girl feels safe and protected. Yet, she falls victim once again as she succumbs to the lies and abuse at the hands of a stranger.
Award-winning author Rich Finzer, explores the twin themes of love and emotional salvation in this; his second novel. Julie & Me is a tribute to the human spirit and to the human heart’s infinite capacity for forgiveness.
Excerpt
Once in Rothchild’s, Julie found her perfume and I paid for it. I did the same with her purchases at Woolworth’s and Rite Aid, tossing in a few packs of Salem as well. I could see her mentally trying to tally up the total, like the night I’d taught her to tally a bowling score. I missed Econ and was an hour late for work, but it really didn’t matter. Minus her Learner’s Permit and address book, she’d been made whole. She promised to meet me in the Union snack bar at eight that evening.
When I met her, she smelled incredibly sexy. “Mmmm, is that some of the perfume you bought today because if it is, it’s divine. Honey if you wear that, you won’t need to wear anything else. And if you do wear anything else, you won’t be wearing it for very long.”
Growing serious for a moment, Julie replied; “Richie, even when Daddy sends me my allowance check, I won’t be able to pay you back all at once.”
“Julie you’re so right, you won’t be able to pay me back - I don’t care how much money your father sends. You’re my girl, you were in trouble and whenever that happens, it’s my job to protect you and fix what’s wrong. Honey, there is no debt for you to repay. Julie, I’m not planning on hanging around only when it’s good times; fer chrissake when it’s good times you don’t need me. It’s when it’s bad times; that’s when it counts. I told you once before, it’s only money, lousy stinking money which is of no use unless you put it to use. Julie, if I’d had it to spend; I’d have bought you one of everything in Rothchild’s. Honey, I don’t know what I’m gonna do with you. You seem to forget that I love you and as far as you’re concerned, no sacrifice is too great to bear. Julie, when you love somebody, you don’t keep score. Now give us a kiss girl, because that to me is more precious than all the gold in Fort Knox.”
