Whitechapel, England 1888: English football was in its early stages. Preston North End won the FA Cup and the 1888-89 British Home Championship was won by Scotland when they defeated the host England 3-2 in the championship match. Robert Gascoyne Cecil was the Prime Minister from 1886-92. Queen Victoria was fifty years into her reign which would not end until her death in 1901. In the latter part of the 19th century the east end of London was in a bad way. In stark contrast to the west side which was home to most of London’s elite, the east end was where the very fringes of society lurked. Factory work did not pay enough to cover the bills and many single women were forced into prostitution just to make ends meet. Diseases such as typhoid fever and cholera were prevalent due to the worst unsanitary conditions imaginable. To say that the Whitechapel of the 1880’s suffered from extreme poverty would be a gross understatement. While the west end and indeed the rest of England ignored it, the east end sank into a cesspool of depravity, disease and degradation. It was in this environment that one of the most infamous serial killers of all time would thrive. Jack the Ripper was about to begin his reign of terror.
