Yohannes was adopted as a baby from Ethiopia, during one of its most turbulent times. Having grown up in the UK, he returns to Addis Ababa to find himself thrust into the perplexing social structure of contemporary Ethiopia. He meets a whole raft of unique and entertaining characters who will be recognised by Ethiopians and non-Ethiopians alike.
Built on my personal experiences of living both in Ethiopia and overseas, this book explores people’s similarities in the broad context of humanity, while attempting to highlight our unique cultural and religious identities. Although the themes are serious, it entertains with a light humour, as well as providing an insight into life at all levels of Ethiopian society. I would like to think that for my fellow Ethiopians – whether living at home or abroad –Yohannes Ishiwill serve as a window to look into the unique customs of their fabulous country and, for those who are not familiar with the culture and history of Ethiopia, it will act as an inspiring introduction.

Riveting read
I read this book in 2 sittings! Telling the story of an Ethiopian boy (Yohannes) found in an orphanage in Addis Ababa and adopted into an English family, it takes the reader through his childhood in England, to his return to Ethiopia in adulthood, how he learned his native language and integrated into the local society.
It's a lovely, gentle and utterly compelling read, which I would recommend particularly to anyone who wants to learn about Ethiopian culture easily and naturally.
A great read
I love this book - it's a really entertaining light read full of individuals' stories and memorable characters. It has loads to say which is relevant to anyone who has an interest in in travelling, in living in other countries, and in working out where they belong, while, at the same time, being extremely readable. The pictures it paints of Ethiopia as a country are vivid and the people that you come across as the story progresses are believable, likeable and interesting. I found myself really wanting to know what happened to all the characters - their stories are fascinating and often, also, funny. Mr Bamato has a lovely turn of phrase and I hope that we will be seeing more from him in the future.
