5 Golden Rings
BARTHOLOMEW DIXON, VISCOUNT WESTON, future Earl of Hartley, leaned a shoulder against the wall, one ankle crossing the other. Hand in his pocket, he fingered the four golden rings he’d already garnered by way of seduction. All he required was the fifth to win the bloody asinine wager one of the leaping lords of Boodles had challenged him to. Victory was but a hairsbreadth away.
He glanced about the elaborately decorated hall with its myriad candles and greenery that covered every post, archway, and tabletop, searching out his final quarry. Lady Evelyn Powell. It shouldn’t be difficult. Her flaxen hair would be piled high, and those cool blue eyes would flash their mocking humor. But he cared naught, all he required was the ring.
Trust
DARLING, YOU MADE IT!”
Angelique Daugherty hugged her Aunt Tina tightly, a pang of emotion inundating her. She hadn't seen her since last year’s Valentine extravaganza at the SweetHart Lodge. She’d missed her. Especially in light of Angelique’s recently changed status—single.
“I wasn't certain you would be on hand to help out after speaking with Saffron.” Aunt Tina stood back and leveled Angelique a piercing gaze.
Angelique snorted if only to deflect her aunt’s sharp assessment. “You know you can’t rely on anything my mother tells you, Auntie. She’s stuck in the sixties.” Hence, the ridiculous name she’d been christened. Her father’s was even worse—Ephram. Yet, the two were still as much in love as the day they’d met and changed their names at the infamous Woodstock.
When Irish Eyes Are Smilin'
NIALL ADAMS EYED THE bartender with suspicion. There was something odd about the dude. Familiar. And for a minute there, he’d swear he’d seen pointed ears, but on second look they appeared normal enough. Niall blinked and scrubbed a palm over his scruffy beard. Strange dreams that had been plaguing him for the last three years were taking their toll, and his mind. Even more frustrating, he couldn’t seem to recall anything much before those last three years.
“What’ll it be, Yank?”
The bartender’s heavy brogue nagged at Niall. He studied him a moment, realizing in a searing flash Niall’s blood was just as Irish as the bartender's. “I’ve a throat on me, Sprog, give me a pint of plain.” The phrase slipped as naturally from him as sand in the desert.
A dangerous twinkle glittered in the man’s eyes. “Sprog, is it?”
“I could say the same about ‘Yank.’ ”
A tense moment passed before the man spun on one heel and flipped a pint glass in the air. He caught it right side up and held it under the Guinness spigot. A second later it was slammed on the wood surface before Niall, without so much as a spilled drop.
Tainted Blood
CANDACE CUPARDÉ WAS A GHOST. Specifically, Cupid’s ghost. And being a ghost was no picnic. She longed to let loose her displeasure with a few choice words. But, unfortunately, as Cupid (ghost or not, withstanding) that was an impossibility. Choice words just would not form on her tongue. If she tried to say “damn” it came out as “dart.” “Bastard” formed as button on her disobedient tongue, and if she tried to say “hell”— you guessed it: the word “heart” spewed forth. And well, heart just lacked certain satisfactory elements. Like telling the devil to go to—heart? Most irritating.
Candace was almost certain her long-time friend Dracula (hereto referred as devil), also better known as creepy-scary-vampire-guy, had found some way to divest Candace of her one opportunity of transforming back into her former magical self. And she was furious.
