In a magic forest and its adjoining dream world, a teen shape-shifter, a tiny space alien, a baby bird, and a dreamy cat enjoy adventure, mystery, romance, and frequent naps.

Spend a year in a magical forest where humans, birds, cats, orangutans, and even extraterrestrials live together happily, and enter a dream world where the Secrets of Sleep ensure restful nights for all. Life is busy as the seasons change and the forest kids experience adventures, games, creativity, friendship, and love. Meet Baby Bud, a wee birdie who's never too sleepy for a bedtime story; Füzzy, a shape-shifting Secret of Sleep; Celeste, a charming tabby; and Goldenbeak, a tiny space alien who wants to hang out with the big humans. Come to the studio as the sleep jockeys prepare a midnight broadcast. Revel in the festivities as the Mystery Cats are sworn in. And don't forget to get your sleep order in now--the sleepy train awaits!

Excerpt

The night before his graduation, Füzzy crooned to Celeste while she was sleeping a nubby pink sleep:

My Cevestee is rolled, rolled
Rolled in a ball of cat.
Where’s the face? Where’s the tail?
Where’s the paws? Where’s the nose?
Where’s the eyes and where’s the toes?
My Cevestee is so perfect rolled
A furry round ball of cat.

And he sang this again to her the next day, when she was awake.

“Thank you, Füzzy. But, Füzzy, all cats know how to do this. And many cats sleeps like this, I think.”

“Yeah, could be. But not like you, Ceveste. It never saw such a perfectly round sleep. It is beautifilled.”

Füzzy’s graduation as a Mystery Cat was a beauti sight to behold. He was there with the other new Mysteries, and they looked so excellent in they lovely caps and gowns, and they made beauti speeches, and then there was The Dance, to honor the wild ancestors of long ago and far away. It was most excitie; they looked so fierce and so elegant when they made their beauti sounds, and their pounces, and their stalkings. And then the most amazing part: when Füzzy assumed his Mystery Cat form. Everybody went “Ooh,” and then they applaud and cheered. It was most excellent. And Green was veti sparkling, and she had a wonderful part in The Dance, and they pounced so charming all over the levels, which made everything veti pouncey.

At the party after the ceremony, Celeste gave Füzzy a lovely card with her picture on it, that she drew herself, and a gift she gave him: a furry brown poid, light enough to wear now, warm enough to wear in the winter. It was many shades of brown all over, sparkling with frecks, and she said, “It is a magic dream poid: it will grow and shrink with you, when you are a cat and a snail and anything else you like to be.”

Professional Reviews

The Basket Casts a Spell
The Basket of Seeds is a book that casts a spell. It invites you into an ethereal world of fantastical creatures where the kittee lies down with the baby bird. (Baby Bud invites everyone into her nest), where cat and shape-shifter (sometimes a dog) can marry and species cross over to form unexpected friendships.
A lot goes on within the Basket as characters engage in a pleasant busyness. Life is festive by day, safe and sound by night. They sleep deep sleeps that can be pink and wavy and many other extravagant shapes and colors.
Fuzzy, a shape-shifter, is taking lessons at the Cat School so he can become one, all for love of his Celeste, a tabby. Floateens come in clusters and express themselves with their strings. Their origins are extraterrestrial. Ponies who store “things” in a dream closet come and go, as do a host of enchanting beings.
The author, St. Julian, seems to inhabit each of her creatures, who speak in a language that is tiny and sweet. You have to ask whether St. Julian is a shape-shifter too. How else could she know the voices of her characters so well?
