Hypnagogic Shifters: Superposition, Penelope M. Fernandez, 2014. Do not pass this one by just because it is a first novel by a self-published author. Yes, it has the usual flaws one would expect, but Fernandez will take you on a fantastic and bizarre journey past shades of Kafka and Philip K. Dick. This is no space opera. It is a twisted blend of outer space and inner space tearing the main character, Blaz, to shreds and dissecting his and our ethical foundations and perceptions of reality. The extreme vocabulary may at first seem amateurish, but it will soon blend in to the setting and the mood of this story so well that when Fernandez emerges in to what may be the real world at times, those words show you how deeply you have fallen into the spell. If you want action in your sci-fi, you will have to endure the torture of Blaz’s soul first. Well worth the effort!

Possibly one of the best Sci-Fi novels
Within the first few pages, I could tell from the rich language and interesting vocabulary the this novel was going to be a riveting read. The author expresses creativity, intellect, and mind-tingling ideas through intricate detail and a suspenseful plot. I am sure many readers would be able to relate to the thoughts and emotions of Blaz, the main character. I know of no other novel that is able to describe ideas and concepts in such lengthy detail while still having a strong grip on the reader's attention. Whether you agree or disagree with any of the notions in the novel, they will still encourage you to do some thinking of your own. This is an impressive and refreshing novel that stands out from the crowd, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys novels that induce curiosity and wonder.

Hypnagogic Shifters: Superposition is the type of book that engages you emotionally, you have to arrange time and space for it like for a person with many layers and covers, as you want to try and understand what each of them means.

I won’t discuss the plot here to avoid spoilers but the book mostly takes place in the city of Diam and the story evolves around a young man, Blaz Kruger, who resembles the essence of today’s world: lost in hateful job, sick and tired of hypocrisy, craving for value and meaning. One night mystical things start to happen in and around Blaz... Eventually he meets an alien creature Cain (any hints to the first human born and the first murderer?) who turns Blaz’s life into an unending storm and stress with bizzare twists and turns.

I’m certain readers will appreciate the depth of the intelligent dialogues and the controversies explored in this book, such as the subjects of religion, inequality, degradation, fate of humanity, ethics of science and so on. Not one time the story 'pushed' me to the wall and made me think, “Could I do that?”.

If I have any criticism, it’s that sometimes the language in the book is overly complicated and I had to grab the dictionary a few times to clear the meaning of some words. Not that I don’t like exercising my brain anyways ;)

Overall, it’s a great introduction by the new gifted author. Pick it up and let your mind take a wild trip!
