January, 1981
Dr. Arnie Somers got the emergency page while he was tending to the Hairston family’s newborn foal. The filly had just come through a difficult birth, but she and her mother were pulling through just fine. He took the call in the Hairston’s kitchen.
After Arnie hung up the phone against the wall, he stared at the window panes over the sink. There had been an accident. A terrible accident. Arnie no longer felt the cold, heavy, wetness against his clothes from the heavy rains he’d just run through from the barn. He no longer noticed the heavy raindrops smashing against their window. He even missed the sound of his best friend, Claude Hairston, calling his name at least three times before he was startled by the man’s gentle touch against his arm.
“Arnie, let’s go.” Claude wasted little time getting his two sons to the barn to tend to the foal. He had to get Arnie to the accident site, to the veterinarian’s wife and daughter.
The crash was in front of Regency Square mall, a twenty-five minute drive from the Hairston farm in Goochland County. Dumb-ass driver, a Mr. V. Gibbons, barreled through the light making a left from Starling Drive onto Quioccasin Road. Approaching that God-forsaken hill near the Toys “R” Us store they’d just built. The one store Arnie’s daughter loved so much. A nightmare intersection at any time, yet a rainy New Year’s Eve afternoon mixed with alcohol made it much worse for the drivers and passengers of the three cars that got in Dumb-ass’s way. He missed striking the other two cars. Violet and Natasha Somers weren’t as fortunate in theirs.
