On one occasion, later in high school, May 10, 1984, to be exact, the young Aviator was particularly glad he had taken the initiative to complete his homework ahead of time. Because of his promptness and diligence in getting his homework done early, he succeeded in convincing his History teacher to let him cut class for the day to help a friend, Chris Fredericks, resolve a transportation scheduling discrepancy.
Chris had missed the bus to a track meet in Kennewick, Washington. That was a three hour drive from Wenatchee. But, it was only a one-hour flight. Chris missed his bus. He didn’t miss the track meet. And the coaches got something to squawk about.
“Chris, you made it! How? You missed the bus. When did you leave?” someone grilled him as he and the Aviator sauntered over to the Kennewick High School track field from the airfield a few blocks away.
“Oh, we left about and hour ago,” Chris replied, smiling.
