After an hour and a half, the jury returned with the verdict. My heart began to pump cold blood through my veins as anxiety overwhelmed me. I wanted to go into the courtroom and hear the verdict, but fear grasped me and weakened my innermost being, the part that kept me sane. My body began to weaken like a flower deprived of water. Given the sick feeling in my gut, it was to my advantage that the investigator had me go sit in the waiting room. It was almost as if she felt my pulse racing—as if she could read my mind.
While my son, daughters, and I waited for the verdict, we prayed. As we sat in dead silence, I noticed the uneasiness of my youngest daughter. I could not quite read her true feelings, but I knew something was wrong. As I observed her, she stood and then bolted out of the room. Concerned, I asked the investigator to go find her and check on her. When the investigator came back, she informed me that she was fine. The investigator then went to sit in the courtroom to hear the verdict. I sat at the edge of my seat while my eldest daughter cried, “I know it is not guilty! I know it is not guilty.” A few minutes later, I noticed the doorknob turning, and my heart began to beat like never before.
The investigator opened the door.

You Need to Read This Book
The Other Side of the Story is the author’s heart-wrenching story of how she and her family were, essentially, abused by the U.S. criminal justice system. It all starts when her husband is accused of a crime he says he didn’t commit. From there the book takes you an emotional rollercoaster ride that is so extreme, you have to remind yourself that this is actually a TRUE story.
There are several aspects of this book that I really appreciate. First and foremost, Daphine’s writing style is incredibly engaging. The Other Side of the Story is a certified page-turner. I just couldn’t put it down! This is made all the more impressive by the fact that the author never reveals what the accusations against her husband are. To be honest , I wasn’t sure if she’d be able to hold my attention as reader, without going into detail on the charges. I’m no author myself, but if I was, I might have taken the easy route and attempted to hook the reader with the “tell-all” strategy. Instead, it was Daphine’s skillful storytelling abilities that kept me riveted to my seat (and gripping the armrest).
Secondly, this book is positively inspirational. How this family manages to hold on their hope, their faith, and their sanity in the midst of such an utterly awful situation is beyond me. I’ve gone through far less and completely lost it. Reading their story though, reinforces the importance of not giving up. Even when everything seems to be falling apart, hold on. You never know what is around the corner. Perhaps the victory you’ve been hoping and praying for is just beyond what you thought was your breaking point. This book reminded me that faith and hope are two of the most powerful forces we possess.
Lastly, The Other Side of the Story serves as cautionary tale about the imperfections of our legal system. Should you ever find yourself embroiled in a legal situation (God forbid), it’s important to realize that the system may not play fair. In fact, it seems to me that the opposite is often true. Consequently, it pays to know your rights and be willing to fight for them. I was completely appalled by some of things that happened to the author and her family. The naive part of me wanted to believe that justice is always served and that the truth triumphs over all. However, the reality is, the scales of justice are not incorruptible and the triumph of truth is not guaranteed. This is why you NEED to read this book. You need to know what our justice system is capable (good and bad). Daphine’s story provides an in-depth look into the heart of the beast. The education that you receive from reading this book could, quite literally, save your life or the life of someone you love.

It was a powerful story of a vicious struggle to maintain ones sanity while battling court hearings and injustice that reduced them to poverty. But their unwavering faith in God is what sustained them and made them end up victorious. A powerful woman who stood behind her husband.
