Everyone needs this book!
I opened this book with the initial intention of skimming through it before sitting down at a later time to read it, and as it turned out, I couldn't put it down. The author speaks with clarity and compassion and provides tools and tips for improving communication and interactions within the context of real-world scenarios and client-therapist conversations. She teaches us how to say "no" without resentment or anger, how to find our "authentic" voices, and how to handle a wide variety of situations: dating/marriage, parenting, friendship, finances, and workplace issues. I also appreciated her keen sense of humor, present throughout, but what struck me the most was the palpable empathy with which she presents her case for taking better care of ourselves by setting realistic boundaries and managing expectations. This is a therapist who truly cares that we take better care of ourselves, and become more fulfilled as a result, and it shows in this fine book.
Invaluable, a 'must read'!
This book is a must read.
In relationships, in work and in life, we are pressured to be, say and do things that aren't the best for us or others. Brown's book, Backbone Power The Science of Saying No, teaches how to stand up against those pressures and be our best selves.
In a world where bullying has become rampant, our children need to learn how to reject negative peer pressure, and have their actions reflect the values that we so carefully teach. Backbone Power shows us how to teach our children to stand up and not be swayed.
In our relationships, we need to insure balance, that our partners respect our needs and in fact who we really are, and that this balance trumps our `need to please' and to `be liked'. Through anecdotes and examples, Backbone Power helps us identify where our relationships may be out of balance, and give us the tools to regain ourselves.
In our lives, living through our values and not being swayed from what we believe is what makes us whole, but is sometimes hard to do in the face of work, peer, friend or economic pressures. What better shape would the US be in today if our financial structure was managed with integrity and not corruption. Backbone Power should be required reading for everyone working in any banking or lending capacity!
Backbone Power helps us identify where in our lives we are not living through our true values and teaches us the tools to insure that we do.
Anyone - in fact everyone - will benefit from Brown's wisdom, teaching and methods on how to live this better life.
Anyone - everyone - can live a life where we are stronger and more aligned with what we believe in, and this book will lead us there.
From people pleaser to warrior
Dr. Brown helps people pleasers (those who say yes when they mean no) become warriors (setting boundaries, making requests, speaking authentically). If you are a conflict avoider, this book outlines the emotional and physical health risks and uses client-therapist conversations to show you how to take care of yourself and say no without guilt. It also includes a workbook with thought provoking questions. Very good book.
