The purpose of this book is to open communication between students and their parents and school personnel about how to keep students safe in today’s environment.
To Students
Getting ready for college is a special time. You are experiencing so many new things in life such as getting your driver’s license, a car, a job, meeting people from different cultures, planning trips on your own, independence and much more. It’s easy to be caught up in all these experiences and to forget about safety because… let’s face it, safety is somewhat boring compared to the other things, but it is just as important for you to be smart about safety so that you can truly enjoy your college experience.
To Parents
As a concerned parent, you want to help your student choose the best school for their interests. Whether you are sending your first child off to college or a younger child, treat every child’s experience as if it is your first child’s experience. Even if this child is going to the same school as that of an older sibling, go to a campus visit. Times have changed. Schools adopt new policies, build new buildings, and add new staff… You get the picture.
Let’s get right down to it to address the elephant in the room. School shootings are up in recent years across school campuses. As a result, schools are implementing new strategies to protect students and staff.
In addition to school shootings, there are other threats that students need to be aware of including sexual assaults, burglary, and robbery, identity theft, hazing and even food or drink safety.
These incidents usually occur in “dorm rooms or apartments, offices and instructional areas such as classrooms, lecture halls or laboratories,” (Drysdale, 2010).

This book is a comprehensive guide to important security issues that must be considered as students make the transition to college.
The book is a valuable resource for concerned parents. It also provides numerous tips for students to have a safer experience. I especially liked the Scenarios section of the book which can open a dialogue between parents and their college-bound children on issues of campus safety.
The author makes a compelling case that campus security should be considered when choosing a college. The author shows how security issues can be investigated as part of campus visits.
I also appreciated the author’s direct, journalistic writing style that didn’t waste words.

Safety concerns are a huge issue nowadays in all areas of life. Ms. Kelley discovered a need for this type of book when helping her two sons choose their colleges. Her vast experience as a technical writer positions her perfectly for writing this kind of book.
I agree with the author that college students need practical, real-world advice on how to find the potential threats and weigh the risk factors at each of the colleges they are considering before they make a final decision.

Some of the concerns mentioned by Ms Kelley, such as the shootings for instance, are not that relevant in Australia today. However, and I hope not, this could change in the future. But most of the concerns addressed by Ms Kelley are relevant in Australia and I would think across the world. All campuses at one time or another deal with various crimes such as sexual assaults, thefts, burglary and robberies as well as hazing, food and drink safety.
It is clear that Ms Kelley has done extensive research before she wrote this book and the information is well presented and comprehensive. A lot of parents will feel comforted having so much information at their fingertips. Ms Kelley’s research will enable parents to make informed decisions about what will be the safest campus to send their child to.
This book definitely fills a gap in the market. The safety of our children is paramount and Ms Kelley has done a tremendous job by making it easier for parents to make an informed decision.
I will gift this book to my brother who is currently researching what colleges are suitable for his sons.
Great for students but even better for parents who have children about to head to college
This is a great resource for anyone about to head to college, but I also think it is wonderful for parents who have a child about to go to college. Personally as the father of two girls I found this book very valuable
The book is short and easy read, but packed full of good information, like how to plan a visit to campus, or what apps can help keep you safe.
I will be taking many of the tips to heart when my girls start down the path to college
