Brooke was the only reason Tilly enjoyed venturing to the ballpark every now and then. An engaging smile with soft, delicate features and glistening eyes made Brooke a favorite of every male who walked into the front office, and Tilly was no exception. He had his eyes on Brooke for some time, but never worked up enough courage to ask her out. He felt she may know of his off-the-field troubles and would often shy away from conversations that could lead to a date. And now he quickly noticed a solitaire diamond on her left hand. Brooke was a catch and Tilly knew it was only a matter of time before someone would snatch her up. And apparently someone had already done just that. At that moment, Tilly’s heart was pounding like a thoroughbred’s hooves down the stretch as he walked with trepidation back inside the Dodger’s offices and made his way to the opulent edifice better known as the general manager’s office. Adorning the walls were photos of former Dodger greats – Jackie Robinson, Sandy Koufax, Roy Campanella, Duke Snider, Pee Wee Reese, Gil Hodges, Ron Cey, Steve Garvey, Fernando Valenzuela, and a few others. It was a visual collection of baseball immortality. What Tilly found amusing was he and most everyone else associated with the organization knew Gold couldn’t identify one of those players unless their name was clearly marked underneath the photo. Jackie Robinson may be the lone exception and this fact alone gnawed at Tilly. How someone could be so devoid of knowledge about the history of the game and run a ball club from a room that looked like it belonged inside a museum in Beverly Hills. Aside from the team’s artifacts, Gold enjoyed the finer things in life. Expensive furniture, crystal lamps, and plush throw area rugs that he and his wife brought back from their trip to Turkey a few years back were more than just the focal points in the room. They dominated the atmosphere. Gold, short in stature, made up for his height insecurity by throwing around a large vocabulary. Most words that were lost on Tilly the moment they left his lips. Tilly knew it was the GM’s ploy to belittle his lack of education, but it didn’t really bother him. A high school graduate, Tilly had the option of playing college ball at Cal Poly or UC Irvine, but instead chose to sign a pro contract and begin fulfilling his dream of being a major league pitcher. He never wanted to go to college. That would only delay his entrance to the bigs, a day he dreamed about since he was just a little boy having catch with his dad in the backyard of their small, two-story brick house in Paso Robles, just north of San Luis Obispo.

Clever, Compelling, Inspiring!
A wonderful read, especially for those who love the spirit of baseball and the fundamentals of love and life itself. Beautifully crafted story with twists and turns all throughout. "What-ifs" abound and I found myself transported to the time in my life when I experienced not only loss, but clarity in its aftermath. Uplifting, gripping, and poignant. Really a gorgeous book.

Emotionally Fulfilling!
I felt from the opening pages of "A Season With Hope" that I had an emotional connection. It is not very often that you find a story that so easily has the ability to transport you to a time & place, but this read did. Loving sports as I do, but also having become more emotional as I have aged, Drew's book proved a perfect blend of both.
