Category:  Children
Type: Fiction

The Ebook version:
A humorous, exciting tale of the wars between good and evil armies of wizards and witches which is ideal for fans of fantasy stories aged 7 years upwards.

Modern wizards and witches are leading extraordinary, peaceful lives hidden from the rest of the world.

Breaking an ancient truce, backward, outrageous, evil wizards and witches launch an attack on their old enemy. Armed with outmoded weapons and trying to use mystical creatures that they cannot control, they fight amongst themselves for power.

As good and evil forces clash, four young wizards and witches find themselves in perilous situations. In a twist of fate the are forced into an unexpected showdown.

This story is full of ferocious dragons, unpredictable zilants and a zany snake. There is gross humour involving the evil characters and their foul and wacky habits. All this has been thrown into a cauldron and stirred until a book for children emerged to amuse and entertain them.

Excerpt

The excerpt below is from the chapter where young wizards and witches are being shown where their ancestors from the first Great Wizard War lie - hidden from the world - waiting for a spell to revive them:

‘If you guard the Great Warrior Wizard, do you… do you also guard… the Dark Warlord?’ Danny asked in a hushed voice.
‘Yes, I do. He has additional security guarding him. You need to know what that is. Follow me… to the keep!
In awed silence, the party trailed behind the tall figure. They had no idea what to expect. Lance stopped when they came to a large reinforced door in the keep. He turned to them, ‘This is the biggest secret of all. In size, that is! Don’t be afraid, Fordo is very friendly and he is expecting you all. He loves to show off his abilities. But his most important job is defending the keep from anyone or anything attempting to reach the Dark Warlord and his fallen ancestors.’
Lance pointed his wand at the door and chanted, ‘Aperta!’
The huge door slowly swung open. A huge red scaly head appeared in the doorway. Large orange eyes surveyed them from a height.
They all gasped and took a step back. This was a REAL dragon!
‘Come out, Fordo. Show us what you can do! I know you love to show off!’ said Lance encouragingly.
With his massive chest puffed out, a fierce looking red dragon emerged and bowed his head theatrically as he spread his wings out above his head.
‘Fordo communicates with me by thought. This became possible after he learnt our language when he came here. Fordo will be on guard for three years. After that, he will return to his island home and I will recruit another dragon to help protect the keep.’
They were still speechless at the sight of the huge dragon. He was awesome!
‘Fordo, as you will have learnt at school, is a Fire Dragon. His forefather was Zorgo who lead the dragons in the Great Wizard War. He will demonstrate his firepower. If you look at the top of the ramparts you will see a scarecrow dressed as a Deadly Wizard. It is thirty meters away. On with the show, Fordo!’
The Fire Dragon took a long deep breath and opened his mouth. A long flame of searing heat arched over their heads and incinerated the scarecrow in a flash of sparks. Just a pile of black ash settled where the scarecrow had been.
Everyone clapped and Fordo bowed again. Smoke was still coming out of his nostrils.
‘It’s Fordo’s exercise time. Would anyone like a ride?’
There was another stunned silence. Then they all shouted at once, ‘YES, PLEASE!’
‘Fordo can take four of you at a time. While you are waiting for your turn, you might want to look at the Dark Warlord in the keep and wander around the fortress.’ Lance turned to Ginny, ‘As it’s your birthday, you may go first with three friends of your choice.’
Trembling with excitement, Ginny pushed Katy, Danny and Josh towards the dragon. She walked up to Fordo and reached up with her hand. Fordo lowered his huge head and she rubbed him between the eyes. Fordo rumbled in appreciation and closed his eyes.
Lance helped them onto the dragon’s back. Fordo waited while Lance attached a collar with four pairs of reins round his neck. He passed a pair of reins to each of them. ‘Don’t worry if you fall off, Fordo will swoop down and scoop you up! There is an invisibility barrier put up whenever Fordo flies, so you won’t be seen from outside these grounds. Enjoy the ride!’
The Fire Dragon swept into the air with powerful strokes. He soared high into the sky taking them four kilometres above the ground and then dived down in circles. It was the most exhilarating ride the four had ever experienced. They whooped in delight.
When they landed each of them stroked Fordo. He lapped it all up like an oversized puppy! Fordo was never happier than when he was flying. But he took his job of guarding the diabolical sleeping Dark Warlord very seriously. He would do his best to make sure no enemy would get past him and live if they tried to reach that evil monster!
After their ride, the Feisty Four went to look at the Dark Warlord in the keep. In the gloom his evil black eyes appeared to be glaring directly at them.
Danny and Josh looked at each other. The evil wizard lying before them resembled Cryptor! Cold shivers ran down their spines…
‘We can’t ruin the party by telling anyone what we suspect,’ Danny whispered to Josh. ‘We need proof!’ Little did the boys know that Felix and Fabia already had more than enough!
After Fordo had given everyone a ride, the party gathered in the courtyard where Lance was preparing the chariots to take them back. They were all buzzing with adrenalin after the afternoon’s events.
Fordo was given a huge round of applause and he took bow after bow as he backed into the keep. The dragon looked at them all and thought, ‘I hope you all enjoyed your ride!’
Everyone gasped and looked at the Fordo, ‘Yes! We did!’
The door closed. They were all overwhelmed! Fordo had let them read his thoughts! They would never forget this day!
Lance turned to face the party. ‘Remember what I am about to tell you, everyone! You are about to become Keepers of the Secrets held in the Great Hall! Never openly discuss what you have seen when you leave. You may be overheard. But if you are sure that only Keepers of the Secret are present and you need to discuss what lies within these walls, it is advisable to soundproof the area you are in. All your parents and elders are already Keepers of the Secrets. Any younger brothers and sisters, who have not yet been to the Great Hall, are still too young to understand that this is important for our security. So, place your right hand over your heart and promise me now that you will keep the secrets of Great Hall!’
They all placed their right hands over their hearts and solemnly said, ‘We promise to keep the secrets of Great Hall.’
The Guardian looked at each of them as they made their promise and inclined his head. ‘Now, it is time for the return journey. Follow me.’
