Attitude
Legend says Hummingbirds float free of time, carrying our hopes for love, joy and celebration. Their delicate grace is touted as a reminder that life is rich, beauty is everywhere, every personal connection has meaning, and laughter is life’s sweetest creation.
In reality, most hummingbirds are aggressively territorial. They would be labeled antisocial if they were human. We, too, have this duality: a balance of light and shadow. Our attitudes determine which is predominant in our lives, and we alone choose our attitudes. If we do not control them, they will control us.
Our attitudes reveal our intentions and affect our choices, which, in turn, create our experiences. When we learn to make better choices, we create better experiences.
We are confronted every day with situations we cannot change. We control only our reactions to these events. Our attitudes. I believe negative things happen to us to guide us in our spiritual growth. The optimal response to a sticky situation, then, is to ask what we can learn from it. Instead of seeing snags and setbacks as obstacles, let’s see them as opportunities, nudges toward a new and better direction. Without this ruffling of feathers, why would we want to change and grow?
Self-pity is an annoying human trait that birds simply cannot comprehend. D. H. Lawrence said, “I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself. A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough without ever having felt sorry for itself.” (Lawrence, 2016)
Duke Ellington knew about proper attitude when he famously said, “I merely took the energy it takes to pout and wrote some blues.” And what blues they are! Blues that heal.
