Let’s Go to Church!
“Get up and get dressed! We won’t be late for church today!” With those words resounding throughout the house, we knew another church day had arrived. We also knew there would be no late sleeping in for anyone today.
I believe I can say without contradiction that whenever we attended church, it was never looked at as a chore or something monotonous, but an obligation.
The strong Christian influences of that day made our doing so not only acceptable, but greatly respected. In fact, one of the most oft asked questions was, “Where do you go to church?”
You could find politicians, governmental leaders, actors, actresses, doctors, lawyers, teachers, judges, the town grocer, and even the milkman in prayer meetings on Friday and then back in church on Sunday morning leading worship service.
This “church thing” was as acceptable as the proverbial baseball, hot dog, and apple pie.
Yet, in the past fifty years, we have witnessed attacks against our Christian Faith that are not only alarming, but in some cases scary!
Now before you say those were the old days and we are now in different times, hear me, “The Ways of the Lord do not change!”
The Scripture says, “For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.” 1
I believe the historic Supreme Court decision of 1962 that banned prayer and devotional Bible readings in public schools, ‘Engel vs. Vitale’, did more to put us on a path away from God than any decision up to that time.
Even as I write, there are ongoing efforts in our nation to remove any mention of God from our society.
Yet, I remind you, it was not mere coincidence, or the idle ramblings of a few “Bible thumpers” that inscribed the words, “In God We Trust,” on our coins and currency.
