Excerpt
Baaaarp baaarp baaaarp the four of us dove to the ground while bullets sprayed around us. The sound of gunfire was the only sound that could be heard aside from us diving to the ground.
“HEY ALEX WHY DIDN’T YOU GIVE US SOME WARNING!” Beth asked.
“WARNING? HOW ABOUT THIS! WHEN I SAY RUN….”
“RUN!!!” Beth yelled.
She didn’t have to tell us twice, the four of us got up barely avoiding the incoming gunfire. It didn’t take us long to reach the top of a large hill. The sand was shifting quickly from all the sudden movement, which made it hard to stand if it continued like this we’d probably…
“Raaaaaagh.”
A strange dog like creature suddenly burst out of the sand, it had two mouths, one where you would normally find a mouth and the other where its eyes were supposed to be. Its skin resembled gravel kind of like a lizard, it had a spear like tail and three large jagged ridges along its back. Its body was dark blue, it had paws/claws which were gray with three on each leg. The creature was inches away from me, time seemed to slow down for me before I realized.
“It’s about to attack me.”
I grabbed hold of its paws, but the force of the creature lunging at me pushed me back. I lost my footing instantly and slid down the hill with the creature on top of me. Immediately it started jabbing its head toward my face trying to take a bite.
“Serious what are the odds, of something…like this happening again?”
I asked myself in a strange mutter.
The creature’s breath was rancid, it made me want to puke, it was strange the last time I was in a situation like this at least Jackal had better breath, not by much but still. Now wasn’t really the time to go down memory lane, this thing would eat me if I didn’t give it my full attention.
“What was it anyway?”
By now I was halfway down the hill, it would take me a few seconds to reach the bottom. Sadly it felt like eternity with this bastard dog trying to eat my face. I maneuvered my face out of the way each time it lunged its head forward, snapping both its mouths at me. When I moved to the left I saw something approaching. Fwwwwssssh a stream of fire leapt into the air flying toward the hill where the others were.
“Look out!”
Would they react in time, it was barely a moment after I yelled that I hit the bottom of the hill and the flames hit the top. From where I was I couldn’t tell if my friends had gotten out of the way or not.
The thought bothered me I couldn’t lose them I don’t know what I’d do, suddenly the dog snapped at me again. I coated my head in hygrometal and head-butted the thing, causing it to whine loudly, then I managed to wrestle the thing off me. Without really trying I threw the creature a considerable distance.
“That takes care of that.” I said to myself.
“Ey pendejo you trynna kill my sand hound. Didn’t think you’d take me barbecuing the stragglers like that, my bad.”
I didn’t recognize the man’s voice but I recognized the accent. He sounded Cuban. I got up quickly while dusting off the sand on my body, the man that spoke was standing by an ATV, he wasn’t alone, because there were a couple of guys surrounding him.
