Written for the layperson, this medical reference guide to common orthopedic conditions includes 271 pages, 80 diagrams/photos, phonetic described medical terms, and much more.

This book is a reference guide for non-medical individuals and lay people presenting over ninety common orthopedic diagnoses and seventy-fsix illustrations/diagrams in an easy to read and understand format. Medical terms and anatomy are phonetically spelt out and explained in an informal yet very instructive manner giving the reader a most unusual introduction to orthopedic surgery and its related diseases.

What sets this book apart from any other guide is the way the author speaks to the reader as if he is their physician and how he presents his wealth of knowledge in a relaxed and easy to comprehend manner. Some of the diagnoses have been a part of the author's own medical past, allowing the reader to feel comfortable knowing that he has a personal grasp of some of the discomfort that they may be feeling. His use of individual stories of patients problems from his own practice punctuates the importance of some treatment issues.

The first chapter explains the reason why Dr. Neviaser wrote this book and the second answers the age old question, “Why do I have to wait so long in a doctor's office?” The rest of the guide is divided into body parts for the first nineteen chapters beginning at the head and ending with the toes. Major diseases include degenerative disc disease of the neck and low back, common shoulder problems, rotator cuff disease and dislocations, and other upper extremity conditions such as tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome and multiple hand complaints. Included with the lower extremity are hip arthritis, common knee conditions including meniscus and anterior cruciate tears, and ankle and foot diagnoses. The final chapters consider osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, stress fractures, bone healing, and what a patient can expect on the day of their surgery.

Excerpt

Everyone has heard of a “slipped disc,” but what exactly does this mean? A disc does not really slip, it fragments within its space and loosens up. When this fragmented tissue pushes, bulges against and stretches the ligaments that hold it in place, pain is almost always felt or “referred” to areas in the neck and the trapezius muscles. Many patients swear they can pinpoint the pain directly over the muscle because they can feel it “right there.” They just know their symptoms are muscular in origin. There’s a simple explanation for this. When someone rubs and massages the area for relief many times a day or even for weeks at a time, this spot becomes quite sensitive. Simply pressing or touching it then produces a pain, but it’s not really the same pain arising from the real culprit, a disc in the neck. This a difficult premise to explain and have the patient understand. The patient will usually complain of pain over either the right or the left trapezius muscle, rarely both. Why? Let’s look more closely at the makeup and anatomy of these discs.
If you’ve seen a skeleton, you know that the spine looks like a long chain of similar-looking bones. Each individual bone is called a vertebra (VER-ta-bra); the plural is vertebrae (VER-ta-bray). A vertebra has three parts: the large, round, canister-shaped part, which bears most of the weight, is known as the centrum; behind the centrum is the vertebral (ver-TEE-bral) arch or dorsal arch, which protects the spinal cord and the nerves within the circle created. It also has two (right and left) oblong outcroppings or processes covered by a white glistening surface which make up one half of the joints (facet joints) that connect each vertebra to another; finally, the pointed midline outgrowth of this arch is the spinous process, or spine of the vertebra.

Professional Reviews

The Way I See It
As a retired ER nurse I loved reading this comprehensive guide to orthopedic problems. Simple to understand explanations with personal touches in several chapters! In a nutshell - I loved it!

Perfect Timing For This Book!
Dr. Neviaser makes the reading of the book very easy and adds many adoring stories to entice you and keep you from getting overwhelmed by medical jargon. He gives advice on how to deal with your own doctor and, most importantly, how to be ready for your appointment to help you and your doctor have a successful examination. He encourages you to be your own advocate and to ask questions and write things down. I have since gone on to other chapters and looked into other issues I have suffered in the past and now can understand more thoroughly. I highly recommend this book to the average joe who is trying to understand medical jargon as it pertains to orthopedics and also for the patient who is wanting to go into an examination prepared and responsible for his/her own treatment.

Understanding your bones from head to toe
The book is far more conversational than I imagined, chocked full of illustrations, patient stories, and personal experiences in diagnosing and treating bone symptoms. There are useful tips, questions to ask, and suggestions for pre and post surgery The book is engaging, informing and at times (although its hard to imagineUnderstnading a medical book could be) entertaining.
