Unexpected Enemy: Ultimate Revenge by Tim Cagle kept me on the edge of my seat.
The author’s character development, right down to the Bostonian accent, was incredible. There are many, many people in this novel. I loved, or depending on who it was, loved to hate all of them. Most of the characters have nicknames and fictitious names; therefore, it’s a bit challenging to keep everyone straight—attentiveness is a must. Lol, I could have used a family tree to help me out.
The plot is captivating but super-complex. For this reason, I needed to pay close attention to who and what was going on in the scene. I didn’t want to miss anything; after all, it is a suspense thriller. I was trying to figure out the“who done it.” And I loved…loved…loved the ending!
The scenes were executed to perfection; I was right there with the characters. The readers are treated to a vivid tutorial about cremation: The heat of the oven, what melts and what doesn’t, the pulverizer, and yeah, teeth are ground down—gruesome, but fascinating.

The book centers around a couple who seek in vitro fertilization to conceive. The couple, Steven and Ann Sorensen, is white, but when their baby is born, the child is not the same race. The parents are distressed at what appears to be a major mix-up at the fertility clinic, but become even more upset when both the mother’s blood and the baby’s blood show HIV infection. The parents immediately seek legal representation, Erika Payne, known to be a shark of an attorney. The fertility clinic is run by 3 physicians, Lee Harlow, his son Austin, and partner Bartlett immediately call on their retained attorney, David Whitney, to defend a mistake they cannot fathom.
The setting of the book is blue blood New England. Aside from the people associated with the clinic, characters include long-tenured Senator Langley Mitchell, who financed the clinic, and who is accustomed to the political life of prestige, money, and having his own way at any cost. He plans to retire, tap and finance his grandson to run for office, taking his place, and maintaining his far-reaching control from the background.
Although the book revolves around the case of parents vs doctors in a huge malpractice scenario, the attorneys and their investigators find that not everything makes sense. Aside from the accused medical malpractice case, there is background intrigue about a long ago murder that has been covered up for years. It’s also about family values, character, honor, and morality.
Most situations were not at all as they appeared. There were many plot twists and turns, many well-described characters, but all woven into a tense, convoluted, yet entirely believable situation. Revenge was the name of the game. Several families and generations came together to right numerous wrongs, and to reward those who had been put down, lied to, cheated and disparaged. A David and Goliath story is always a good read.
Tim Cagle’s writing style is one of barreling forward, but without missing a detail. He is obviously quite familiar with both law and medicine, because the descriptions of both worlds are detailed and accurate. The extensive use and critical importance of private investigators behind the scenes was evident. It’s an exciting book, full of colorful people, some with a conscience, some unscrupulous, some likeable, some to be pitied, some evil beyond belief.
Be prepared for the eternal tug of war between good and evil, and a book that will keep you interested from the beginning to the exciting conclusion.

I first discovered medico-legal thrillers in the Robin Cook era, and reading Tim Cagle’s UNEXPECTED ENEMY reminded me why I enjoyed this genre as much as I do. The story line begins with a twist and believe me: it doesn’t end there.
The book revolves around a couple whose infertility issues have sent them to a clinic for help conceiving. The pregnancy is successful, and both Ann and Steven Sorenson are looking forward to holding their newborn baby boy.
Aaand this is where the first twist happens.
As is my practice, I don’t read others’ “plot spoiler reviews” simply because I want to let the story unfold organically as I read, and I will attempt to write this review in that manner. Let me say that once you recover from the first bombshell, the remainder of the book continues to provide more twists and turns than a roller coaster.
The idea that “revenge is a dish best served cold” is apparent in this tale. I was blown away at the lengths some will go to get their own from the person they feel harmed them, and it made me truly glad that I don’t know anyone like these folks (at least I don’t think I do). Carrying a grudge can be deadly for everyone involved, and often the ones who suffer the most are the ones without a dog in the fight. Thankfully, the story ends with hope and renewal, and the bad guy gets taken down in a most satisfactory manner. I felt like punching the air a la Rocky but refrained since I was reading in a public place. Needless to say, I was rooting for the cause of this generational trauma to get his comeuppance in a mighty big way.
Be ready for a multi-leveled story line that unveils the connections one layer at a time – and I promise that you’ll be cheering for the underdog as loudly as I did. This David and Goliath-type tale was the perfect way to rediscover medico-legal thrillers again, and I am delighted that I have.
