The story THE ENEMY STALKS, a suspense novel that evolves around agent, JIM ANDERSON who retires from the Agency due to an eye injury he acquired after seeking revenge against his wife’s killers. He’s found all but the ring leader. When he leaves the Agency, he’s given a new identity. TOM CASEY, PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR. He moves to the remote COPCO LAKE in northern California. His ability to heal injured hawks earns him the nickname, HAWKMAN, by the local residents. He meets, JENNIFER MORGAN, a young widow and they become friends. He yanked out the desk chair, sat down and rummaged through the drawers for the voice changer. Placing it over the receiver, he keyed in a number and drummed his fingers on his thigh. When a male voice answered, he leaned forward, resting his elbows on the desk. "Interested in a heavy job? You’ll have only one chance. I’ll leave instructions at the usual place."
He dropped the phone back on the cradle and flopped back in his chair. A muscle twitched in his neck while his fingers formed a pyramid atop his chest. After a few moments, he picked up the photo and flipped it with his finger. "Well, Hawk Man, as you now call yourself, your bird-lovin’ days are numbered."

The Enemy Stalks - an exciting opening to the Hawkman series If you're looking for an exciting story with an interesting plot, very appealing characters, and lots of action, Betty Sullivan LaPierre's new "Hawkman" series might be just what you're looking for. The first book, THE ENEMY STALKS, is the story of Hawkman, a former government agent forced into retirement by a disastrous mission which left him with sight in only one eye. Now, with a new identity, he is haunted by the knowledge that the Agency mole that destroyed not only his career but also his wife is still at large and still a threat. He has no idea just how potent that threat is until his shadowy past violently intrudes into his life. Hawkman's past also threatens Hawkman's friend and neighbor Jennifer Morgan. From the time that a stranger tries to kill Hawkman until the end of the book, there's plenty of action, adventure, twists and turns. The threats escalate from phone calls and prowlers to bombs and night crawling assassins. It is a pleasure watching Jennifer grow and change during the course of the book. Although admittedly intrigued by Hawkman, she harbors some doubts about him and his past. She has trouble accepting that violence and danger have not only entered her life, but now threaten it. As the book goes on, she realizes that she must confront this danger with a strength she never knew she had. Jennifer and Hawkman must also confront the fact that, unexpectedly, they are very attracted to each other. Both still hurting from the deaths of their spouses, they come to realize that their relationship is very important to them. LaPierre has crafted a credible, swiftly moving story. She lulls you into a false sense of security with lovely scenes set in the northern California mountain country, then whisks that security away with breathless chases and deadly gunfire. As soon as one question is answered another one pops up to push the action along even more. Who is after Hawkman and why he's being targeted are only part of the puzzle. Woven throughout the book is LaPierre's obvious love of the outdoors. Her descriptions of Copco Lake are lush and inviting: she makes you want to take off down one of the deserted trails and hike into the mountains. You can sense Hawkman's bond with the injured birds that he cares for as well as his satisfaction in being able to release them again. Equally engaging are the characters that LaPierre has created. They're real and interesting - people you'd like to meet, or have as your neighbors. I look forward to the next book in the "Hawkman" series - I have to admit that this one was hard to walk away from. It really drew me in and made me care. Maybe someone was trying to break in. …Her heart pounding, she edged around the bedroom door and slipped into the living room. She stood quietly and heard the faint footsteps on the wooden deck. Her heart skipped a beat and she flattened her back against the wall. Staring toward the lacy drapes on the window, she didn’t see anything. Then her gaze drifted toward the sliding glass door. Her heart almost stopped. She could make out the silhouette of a man on the other side of the semi-transparent curtains. The clicking sound of the sliding lock ricocheted in her ears. The poles she had inserted in the door runner had so far prevented him from getting the door opened, but what if he decided to break the class? Her legs trembled and her stomach jerked in spasms. …Suddenly, the slider hit the pole. She almost screamed in terror, but covered her mouth to stifle her frantic sobs. The curtains fluttered as a cool breeze floated through the small slit in the door. Then to her horror, his gloved hand came through the opening…." Oh my! What a great story of suspense Ms LaPierre had woven for her fans. Her writing moves the reader like a trickle, turning into rapids and heading for a sure tumble over a waterfall. This is a Don’t put me down! novel. The author quickly hooks the reader into the lives of her main characters Hawkman and Jennifer. Someone wants ex-agent Hawkman dead and comes close to succeeding. Having saved his life Jennifer (Hawkman’s beautiful widowed neighbor) finds herself caught right in the middle. Hawkman warns her, "They’ll go through you to get to me." In fact, that’s why the Hawkman himself is a widower and the murderer was never captured. Stubborn; beautiful Jennifer refuses to leave and that’s when the adventure begins. For the reader, this whole novel is an adventure. With the characters you live right on the edge and breathe a sigh of relief at each close call. Best of all, at the end of this novel, the reader has become so entwined in the lives of the Hawkman and Jennifer, that you don’t want their story to end. Romance? YES! They do have their story and nicely done. I am told that Ms LaPierre has a sequel planned. I hope she will toss it my way P-L-E-A-S-E…. Sign me as a fan. THE ENEMY STALKS by Betty Sullivan La Pierre http://www.geocities.com/e_pub_2000 I really enjoyed reading this nifty spy vs. romantic spy fable set in the Pacific Northwest. It affirms once again, that love is blind. The Enemy Stalks focuses on Jennifer, a single woman living by herself in a sparsely settled lakeside community who becomes attracted to her neighbor, a bearded man with an eyepatch. The locals call him Hawkman because of his hobby with predatory birds. Jennifer and Hawkman live directly across a lake from each other along a narrow stretch of water. The distance between them is close enough for each of them to easily observe the other. Things can get a bit dull in the woods even with a satellite dish. She likes dogs and he keeps falcons for hunting. They both like pets. She feels a kinship. Early on, the eccentric loner admits to her that he is obsessed with getting revenge for the killing of his late wife and that he has sworn to murder the perpetrator. He also warns her that she herself is in mortal danger just by being close to him. In the first chapter she finds him in his home lying in a pool of blood, the wounded target of a gunman. The assassin lies dead of gunshot wounds in the yard. This is not discouraging to the determined Jennifer. As the plot thickens, "The Agency" becomes involved. Unmarked helicopters circle overhead and Jennifer receives phone calls warning her of rape and mutilation if she continues to associate with Hawkman. She can't tear herself away from him. She becomes Hawkman's willing partner in his plans for revenge. Although she had never liked having guns around the house, Hawkman gives her a gun and the courage to use it. He teaches her marksmanship just in time to help him kill two Iranian hit men. The story has a nasty sneering villain who hisses and snickers when he speaks. Dogs bite him. He's so mean that even birds peck him. This novel on cassette is a real mouse clicker and the strongest reason yet for investing in a palm pilot.
