Seventh book in the Cat Caliban mystery series, featuring Cincinnati's newest, oldest, funniest detective-in-training.

"Take it from me, Cat Caliban: if someone who looks and sounds like me, with or without picklocks, ever shows up in answer to your prayers, you’d better have a serious heart-to-heart with your maker."

High school sophomore Peter Baer had everything going for him before ending up in the river with a rope around his neck. Hired to find his killer, detective-in-training Cat Caliban begins digging for Peter’s secrets and finds them in an evangelical ministry, where the star attraction is a chimpanzee named Evie. Can Cat crack the case before a killer strikes again? Will Evie find a way to tell what she knows?

Excerpt

I felt a slight tug under my hands. By the time I reacted, my purse was sliding off my lap. I grabbed, but a pair of small brown hands took a firmer grip on it and yanked it from my grasp. I gave a little squeak of surprise as it disappeared around the corner of Joy’s desk.
Joy emerged from the conference room as I was getting to my feet. She noticed me leaning over to look around the side of her desk. I caught a glimpse of pink cloth.
“What’s the matter?” Joy asked. Then, as she drew nearer, she said, “Oh.”
“Do you have a purse snatcher on your staff?” I asked.
She went around the other side of her desk. “It’s just Evie. She has a thing about purses.”
As I watched, fascinated, she bent down and began to scold someone I still couldn’t see.
“Evie, now you know that’s not nice! Give it back.” She reached down and began to tug. “Evie, you’re being very naughty. That’s not your purse, you know it’s not.”
Some odd sounds I couldn’t place began issuing from under the desk.
“You know you can’t take things without asking. It’s not polite.”
I glanced at the young man. He was leaning on the dolly, looking on, amused. The battle for the purse was intensifying, but he made no move to interfere.
Joy reached down with her other hand, then disappeared under the desk. The sounds were becoming more familiar, but what were they?
“Evie, if you don’t give me that purse, I’ll tell Papa on you,” Joy warned. “You know how disappointed he’ll be.”
A small explosion occurred behind the desk. I saw my purse fly up, its contents shooting through the air in all directions. Someone grunted. A brown and pink streak appeared from behind the desk, leapt onto the dolly, and climbed to the young man’s shoulder. He reached out to catch it and threw an arm around its waist.
It was a chimpanzee, just like Bonzo. Except that this chimp was wearing a frilly pink dress, and, if I wasn’t mistaken, ruffled underpants. And she was laughing, baring her teeth with glee at the spectacle of a bedraggled Joy surfacing from under the desk.

Professional Reviews

Action and Fun
"Fans of Cat Caliban can rejoice . . . SEVENTH DEADLY SIN is full of action and fun." Mary Ann Smyth, BookLoons

Engaging and Suspenseful
"I've always loved how unique and well written this series is. The mysteries are realistic and well researched, yet engaging and suspenseful. The books explore social issues with reflective thoughtfulness. What else can a girl ask for in a mystery?" Mint, Mint Loves Books

I Wanna Be Just Like Her
"Make no mistake, this ain't your average gray-haired granny. Cat's salty tongue, her off-the-wall sense of humor and her tell-it-like-it-is attitude keep everyone on their toes and I wanna be just like her when I grow up." Sandra Hardy, Read My Lips
