From Chapter 39 - Attack on Burgundy Street
Jim concentrated heavily; the vortex darkness and velocity increased as it grew and began to slowly envelope him. He now entered into unexplored territory and delved deeper within the core of his being. He concentrated to the point of passing out and found what he was looking for.
“We see you,” exploded in Nikola’s head. He staggered to the ground at the first step of the porch landing.
Aleks picked him up and asked, “Are you okay?”
Nikola turned to Aleks with glassy eyes and said, “Do it now! Storm the house.”
Aleks motioned for his men to follow as Nikola sagged on the stair railing. Aleks and his crew bounded up the stairs with their silenced automatic weapons. Before reaching the back door, they opened fire and splintered the door frame. They kicked it aside and poured into the first floor.
LB was about to open fire when he heard a huge crash outside. He ran to the back where Jim and Bastet were. He looked at Jim who was enveloped in a swirling vortex and turned to Bastet in the window sill. He caught Bastet as she fell to the floor, spent with nothing left. He looked out the window, and the van was smashed to about four feet, crushed as if dropped from some great height.
Aleks and his crew heard the loud crash outside and reflexively turned around to see what had happened. They looked through the large gaping hole that previously had been the back door. In the backyard, they tried to make sense of their van now compacted and smashed.
“What the hell?” Aleks said in English this time.
The invading crew suddenly felt a fog of chill as an inky black cloud of cold nothingness slowly flowed over their heads. The men immediately began to shiver, chilled to their bones all the way to their souls.
Aleks looked out the door and saw Nikola whimpering crouched on the first step. He made an effort to turn back to his men who were totally confused and frozen in fear. It was not a fear of dying but of the unknown evil that now was grasping them. One thing Aleks learned in the Spasnetz was not to surrender but to know when to retreat and fight another day.

Lately I have read several mainstream best selling books where the author failed to properly develop the world & or characters, so it was so refreshing to find that wasn't the case here.
The characters & world were well developed. A sci-fi element isn't my normal read, but because the author did a great job of making it real-world believable, I was hooked by the end of chapter one.
And that cat, made the whole thing all the better.
I highly recommend this book, and hope there's a volume 2 soon!

What a fun read! This book seems to have everything: action, adventure, sci-fi, comic relief, a bit of romance, and a complex plot with many characters, many layers, different settings (Egypt included) and even different time periods. Readers will enjoy how the characters interact with each other, and they will especially like the magical cat that has a bit of a sarcastic side. It's a quick, fast-paced story that is sure to keep your attention. Highly recommend!
