They faced each other with their ears laid back and their eyes glinting, never leaving the face of their opponent. Both cats’ tails were waving in the wind. I was reminded of two jousters from the medieval period of history, facing each other with lances drawn. They readied their horses… they steadied their lances… their battle cry was about to emerge. They hissed at one another and shook their rear ends, indicating that they were ready to pounce. Their hisses turned into low, throaty growls as they faced each other. The two gladiators were also priming their audience. I turned in my chair to watch this noisy spectacle occurring behind me. Even Shadow, the Zen kitty, sat up from his comfy cushion to eye with curiosity the Noisy Ones. We both looked from one Gladiator to the next, wondering who would be the first to charge. They continued to eye each other, issuing their threatening cries, trying to frighten the other. What a drama that is enfolding before our very eyes! I now see two gunmen standing in the middle of Main Street, at High Noon, carefully watching each other to see who would draw first. The concentration… the focus… the sweat… and that was just from the audience, which has now grown to include two dogs sitting there on the perimeters. All of us watch first one, then the other. Their hisses and growls were now interspersed with an occasional howl. Both cats still had their ears laid back and they were pawing at the ground, like a bull ready to charge. The audience continues to grow as Jeff and Jason join the circle of spectators. This is just an unbelievable sight and all of us are watching with growing anticipation. How would this end? Who would be left standing when the smoke cleared? We look like we are watching a tennis game as we move our focus from one to the other. Their howls have reached fever pitch… the time is drawing near… their rear ends are switching back and forth… they are both nearing readiness… their ears flatten against their head. We all lean forward to watch. And just like that… simultaneously… they both lunged at one another. CLUNK! CLUNK! And both cats plowed head first into the glass door that was separating them!

Slice of Life
Debby's style of writing lets you believe that she is talking directly to you, as if you were sitting at her kitchen table drinking a cup of tea. Soon you get to know all the players: her husband, her son, the cats, the dogs, the cows, et al. Each one of the stories will elicit some sort of response from the reader, leaving you laughing with acknowledgement at the foibles of humanity, or crying with the sadness that comes from being all too human.
