Marriage Myth by Sal Marino

We all want to believe in the Happily Ever After expectations of an enchanted, loving and long lasting marriage.

But reality begins where the fairytale ends, and more often than not our dreams of marital bliss can turn into horrific nightmares.

Chuckle along and explore some of the realities married cou[ples can expect when they blindly believe in the Marriage Myth..

Excerpt

Chapter 14 Happily Ever After, Excerpt

"Sure, it’s easy to cite statistics of the decreasing trend in divorce rates over the last ten years as determined by the US Census Bureau and the Center for Disease Control, but no matter how you slice it, 50% of anything is not an insignificant number. I’d like to reiterate that plane crash story: If you knew 50% of the flights you were scheduled to take are certain to crash, would you get on any plane? Only the most aggressive gamblers among us are likely to take that bet, and although I’m somewhat of a gambler, my instincts of late have been far more conservative. But I still hold on to the fantasy that I just might get lucky enough to have someone holding my hand at age ninety-seven, bla, bla, bla…
Yet, despite the ambient cynicism, just about everyone who contemplates some form of wedded bliss in their future, will have observed the speed limit sign, but goose the gas just the same. Denial runs rampant when presented with personal warnings, especially when those cautions are in conflict with the yearnings of an amorous heart. We’ve all heard it said that love is blind, but perhaps a trip to the optometrist prior to making any life altering decisions would be a prudent precaution. However, romantics of the world have hard heads and before they learn that the ‘Love Hammer’ that is mercilessly smashing them on the bean is quite unforgiving, they want to believe the Happily Ever After myth. While Cupid shoots an arrow through their vulnerable ticker, they succumb to a trance-like reality that has no logic or sensibility. Like veterans returning from military conflict, they go through their everyday routines with a familiar thousand yard stare, albeit with goofy smiles on their faces.
Ah, but what blissful comfort being in love enables…There is no better feeling. People in love all seem to have that goofy look on their face, as if they just took a hit of nitrous oxide. If there were a pill that could induce the same effect as being in love, the pharmaceutical industry would revamp all their Viagra production and produce the Love Pill instead. But this would be the part of the story where Happily Ever After ends and reality begins. That’s what the real world is all about, and until we understand that marriage is a journey through this reality, we will be condemned to the frustrations of the myth.
Fortunately, the human spirit is extremely magnanimous in pursuit of love everlasting. Despite all that we know about the potential obstacles most relationships present, we still want to believe that there can be a comforting love on the horizon. Constraints of time and age are no longer impediments to a love quest. We can fall in love with anyone anytime. There is no more a poignant example of this than the number of Geezer dating sites that proliferate the internet, all offering a seemingly last chance at a dream. And why not? We no longer live with the limitations of the past. With the advent of the little blue pill and other pharmaceutical enhancements, men (and women) can experience an encounter with the fountain of youth, feeling and acting young again. Just make sure the pill doesn’t get stuck in your throat: you’ll have a stiff neck for three days. [Rimshot & Cymbal Crash!]"
