While those who perpetrated such evils are not guileless, they certainly dealt with their own demons: a narcissistic personality disorder enmeshed with a bipolar disorder, an obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, alcoholism, and/or polysubstance abuse. This is not to exonerate them but as a recognition of the complex cycle of abuse.

ANAMNESIS
Mommy was not the dearest,
nor my father the warmest.
Early echoes of them,
their presence
or absences,
effects on my life,
swirl like an unfocused kaleidoscope.
Flickering frames
of grainy black-white images,
tinted hues,
a rare, blip of bright colour,
or sepia tones,
silent, deadly.
An adult event
triggers a rushing time vortex,
a Back to the Future
DeLorean flux,
of evocative awareness.
Vivid patterns of light, sound,
scent, taste,
pain.
Are these true memories
or false constructs,
assembled piecemeal
from actual events,
jaded oral histories
or faded snapshots?
Does it matter,
when my heart bursts
and breath catches?
