Abigail returns to her Lake District home seeking peace. By Crystal Tarn Lake, she meets Julian and a tender love ignites. But when Grayson, a shadow from her past, reappears, Abigail must risk everything to escape the controlling man who refuses to let her go.
Some bonds endure even when the past returns, proving that true connection survives every season.
The gray winter air of the English village pressed heavily against Abigail’s face as she stepped onto the bustling pavement, her hands fumbling with the stubborn fastening of her coat. With her head bowed against the chill, she tried to shake off the lingering hum of America. Then the frantic rhythm of approaching footsteps cut through the noise, drawing her attention. Her eyes first caught the swift movement of his boots weaving through the crowd, then followed the long stride of his legs as he moved directly into her path. A sudden gust of wind lifted her chin, and her gaze traveled slowly upward, past the dark folds of his coat, until their eyes locked. Time seemed to suspend itself. The noise of the village faded into nothing, leaving only the impossible pull between them. His gaze held hers with an intensity that stole the breath from her lungs, as though neither of them knew how to look away.
Then he did.
He tore his eyes from hers, and in that single, devastating moment, Abigail felt her heart crash to the floor.
Excerpt
She stopped beneath the ancient yew tree beside the churchyard, and an unexpected weariness settled over her. It was not physical. It was the curious exhaustion that follows an unanswered question.
She rested one hand against the rough bark. What is happening to me? She wondered.
The wind answered first.
It swept through the branches overhead before dancing across the churchyard, lifting a scattering of frost-covered leaves into the air.
One leaf spiraled gently to her feet. She looked down, noticing its veins formed a perfect heart and smiled despite herself.
You have officially become ridiculous.
Still, she slipped the little leaf into her coat pocket, and yet she could not explain why she felt inclined to save it.
Perhaps because it felt wrong to leave it behind.
Perhaps because, somehow, the morning already felt too important to forget.
