This work has general appeal, because everyone wants to be happy. Dr, Schuler has proven this with his work on happiness. Yet this work has greater potential because it does not base itself on religion for its theory and practice. There is no appeal to the beatitudes and one doesn't have to be a believer to get something from the work. The style id direct, honest, and simple. The message is clear, not in any way clouded by sectarian beliefs. The author sees this book as appealing across ethnic and age groupings, to any one who wants to feel god, without creating a dependence on alcohol, drugs or such.

This book makes a seemingly simple statement, namely that we waste out time and energy in being unhappy. The fact is, we all want to be happy all of the time, but we believe happiness is a given, something that comes from someone or something other than ourselves. We actually believe that we are supposed to be unhappy at times, and there is really nothing we can do about it. This book, written in a soft, direct style, shows the reader how to rid themselves of unhappiness for good. It places the responsibility for our own unhappiness right where it belongs, namely with ourselves. There are generally a million and one reasons why most of us choose to be unhappy. Yet we dont like to be around unhappy people ourselves. We look for the good times and the fast track. Rain and gray skies make us droop. So why do we choose to be unhappy? Father Berkery shows us how our beliefs, i.e. our inherited patterns of behavior, lock us into the gloom view. A counselor trained in the highly effective Option Method, the author leads us towards a moment of truth, where we can choose to let go of useless beliefs and put on a new attitude, one that lets us take responsibility for the events in our life and at the same time puts us at the controls where we belong. If you are ready to opt for the natural in your own life, you will in this book not just on target, but just what you were looking for. Theres really no reason in the world you cant awake up each day and say Let the good times roll! and know thats just what will happen.

Excerpt

I've been a priest for forty-five years now and have spent most of that time helping untold numbers of people to find happiness. Along the way, I learned a surprisingly simple fact, one you no doubt keep shutting out of your mind as I did for so long and that is unhappiness just doesn't work.
I've learned something more. The fact is unhappiness cannot work, it is actually a calculated waste of time and a major health threat. You needn't feel guilty about the tons of unhappiness you smothered yourself and your loved ones with over the years. You just simply were following the accepted beliefs of society, the church and school. The fact is, unhappiness is unable to work primarily because it has nothing to work with.
If you don't accept this right now, that's okay. But let me ask you a question. Has it ever really worked for you, or for anyone you know? If you're honest with yourself, you can only answer that you know of not one single instance in your life where unhappiness worked, when it got you what you really wanted out of life.
If you pick up your daily newspaper or turn to your favorite news channel on TV, you learn about unhappiness and unhappy people. If you look over the past hour of your own life, you learn about unhappiness. But we never seem to catch on. We still look to unhappiness as a pathway to happiness, success, peace, health, eternal salvation. Whether it's other people or ourselves, the fact is unhappiness simply brings us more unhappiness.
