Enjoy!   John Michael Domino Excerpt Reflections from the Great Depression During the depression there was a shortage of white flour. If you brought cornbread with your lunch everyone would think that you were poor. My mom worked in a school where she had lunch with several other teachers. Because of the white flour shortage, every day she took one stale white biscuit out of her lunch basket for all to see. She did not want others to think that the family was poor and needy. At the end of the lunch period when others had gone away, she put the stale biscuit back into her basket. Then the next day, she brought it out once again. So that is our family biscuit story. It was not unusual to have a chicken thief. My dad would just leave the undesirable ones near the fence. I would go to my cousins for lunch and every time we ate, her family would have only mashed potatoes. I would say, Pass the potatoes please but potatoes were all that her family had to serve. Reflections from WWII I recall going to Guam on our ship and seeing many dead bodies floating in the water. They were mostly all women and children. Many jumped off a cliff because the Japanese were told that Americans would rape their women and kill their children. When we arrived all the civilians were afraid of us. We just gave them food, cigarettes and chocolate bars. Most were very grateful but others became upset because their kin died in vain! I taught hand-to-hand combat for the US Army on the island of Okinawa. Many men resorted to fighting hand to hand when they had no other alternative. We were cautious not to walk off base alone as some Japanese soldiers were hiding in caves ready to attack us with knives. Once you left the United States on a ship across the Pacific Ocean it was not unusual to be followed by a Japanese submarine. We would we would zigzag while they were submerged. They were always looking for an easy target. It took us about 30 days to get to the Philippines from San Francisco. We were never told where we were going, we found out upon arrival.

1. This was the way it was. It breaks my heart but it also makes me happy at the same time. We will never have days like that ever again. This book captures those days like a snap shot.

This should be required reading in every school. This is real history that is not only interesting, but thought provoking.
If history is not researched, written, and shared with others, we will lose it. This book should be a vital part of every American's library.
This book would also make a terrific gift. The stories and the information are priceless. I loved it and look forward to reading it again

1. Dr. Domino has handily compiled an excellent work that every child and grandchild needs to see!
The cover is exquisite
2. So often, in looking back at history, the human element is left out. In Dr. Domino's book just the opposite takes place. The stories reflect actual people with actual life experiences that bring the time of the Depression to life in the 21st century.

Interestingly the facts shared are amazing and maybe this generation better take a good look at what could happen again. There is nothing new under the Sun. Reviewed by Daryl Sanders

Very interesting read. Great insights about life during the Depression and WWII that only those who lived through it can adequately convey. Enlightening facts for all ages and a great supplement to academic history books. I highly recommend it to anyone who thinks current economic times are tough. Nice job Dr. Domino.
