Meet Whitney Pederson, ESL teacher extraordinaire; on the run from a sticky situation in Toronto. Whitney reached up to print the letter X on the blackboard, for the students to copy. At that very moment, the door to the classroom burst open. The pasty-faced man stood there, along with his accomplice. They both held guns, which they trained on Whitney.
The children screamed.
Whitney felt like screaming too, but she calmed herself in order not to frighten the children even more than they already were.
“Everybody down on the floor,” the pasty-faced man commanded.
“How did you get in here?” Whitney asked. “What do you want?”
“We want him,” he said, pointing at Rinji.
“No, you can’t have him,” Whitney said, throwing herself in front of Rinji. She spread out her arms to shield him from them.
