Two children are parted by world war two only to meet again when the fighting is over.
Alec is a refugee from London who is sent to live on a farm in an English village.
He befriends Jilly, and the two become inseparable - until Alec's parents are killed, and he's taken into a boys home.
After the war he's sent to Australia, where he goes on to become a teacher
Jilly becomes pregnant at the age of 17, and her child is taken for adoption.
Alec returns and seeks her out, and the pair fall in love and marry. Although they have children of their own, Jilly longs to see her lost son again, and set out to find him.
