There is something to be said about having a mate, something comforting, steady, and secure. It gives to the wearer powers to help keep the peace, but there are requirements for its wearer to remember. It cannot be used for self-gratification and greed, it only imparts its host with the abilities if he is truly mated, and if he works for the best interest of the clans. This is one of the reasons Kai is certain of his relationship with Aric. The amulet would not work for him and he would not only lose his ranking within the clans, he would be unable to use the amulet to help his people.

Aric is the opposite of Kai in looks. He is still tall, but bright, light and golden to Kai’s darkness, and he serves as Kai’s lover, mate, and bodyguard. Kai and Aric balance each other well, and are totally devoted, but both realize Kai must produce kits to carry on the peaceful legacy. Kai knows he needs to find a mate to insure the succession, and yet he doesn’t want to cause his mate pain. He is very aware of the necessity, but Aric also knows Kai has never strayed, and has never found a female to take his place. If pushed, Aric knows no one could take his place. But they have to find a willing female to join with them. As unusual as it would be, there is no other recourse, because Aric and Kai are true mates, and only a third party of the right temperament could and would join them and be accepted. Aric is disturbed because he senses the woman who betrayed Kai and stole the amulet could be the mate they are hunting for, but first they must find her, discover the reasons for the theft of the amulet, and claim their prize. He believes Kai when he says the female was under duress, was being forced to steal the charm, and both he and Kai are determined to get to the bottom of the problem immediately.

Sable finds herself in a very difficult and an extremely dangerous position. Having a younger brother to look after and having no clan to aid her, she has been taken by a rogue who is determined to gain the clan’s fabled amulet. With her brother being held as a hostage to Dagan, and knowing the rogue will kill him if she does not do his bidding, she is forced to not only steal the talisman, but also to act as messenger and decoy for Kai in Dagan’s attempt to take his power. She is deeply ashamed and frightened at this farce she is coerced into playing out, and still worries for her brother, and the other unfortunates who have sought refuge only to end up with Dagan. Of course refuge is not what they found, but it is too late to get away now. Sable realizes her only hope, and the only hope of the rest of the clan Dagan controls, is with Kai, and her faith in his innate goodness, and the list of his attributes. Sable sees Kai as a man of honour, a man who would protect her and her brother, a man she could love, a man whose kits she could bear, if only she were free to do so, and if only she and her brother could escape form Dagan. If things could have only turned out differently, she would beg Kai for his forgiveness, and pledge her fidelity to him and his clan.

Dagan is a rogue with evil intent but not a lot of brains when you come right down to it. All he has on his mind is power, control, greed, and more power. What Dagan cannot and would never be able to understand is the tribes, clans, and the very existence of the changelings can be destroyed, and almost was by the same driving forces controlling him now. He is too wrapped up in his own selfish and cruel dreams of domination and wealth to understand how the amulets work. Kai, leader of the cougar clan already has his mate – beautiful Aric, yet in order to provide kits for his clan he needs to mate with a female. While he has not made a choice of which female will be given the honor of bearing his cubs; that has not stopped him from sampling the fruits of the pack.

Aric does not indulge in Kai’s lust for the female members of the pack, as he is yet to meet the female that he is attracted to enough to have her in his bed.

When Kai is drawn to the tantalizing scent of an unknown female – Sable – he follows his instincts and takes her to his bed. Unaware that she has a mission to complete, he enjoys his time with her. When the sacred amulet of the clan goes missing along with Kai’s bed-mate, both Aric and Kai quickly come to the conclusion that more is afoot than meets the eye.

With deception and treachery dodging their feet at every turn, they are on a race against time to not only find the talisman, but also to find Sable.

Jamie Hill and Jude Mason’s FERAL HEAT is an intense read. With the search for a female to have his cubs Kai not only becomes more thoughtful, he also becomes more lustful, and with their highly developed sense of smell, the whole cougar clan wonders when he will make a choice.

Aric is the perfect partner, faithful to a fault, loyal to only Kai and the clan, but also determine and selfless enough to know his limitations and accept what cannot be changed.

Sable is literally caught between loyalty and a demented killer, when she meets Kai she quickly picks up on a few things. The need in Kai, the fact that the passion they share comes only once, and also the fact that Kai is a fair and honest leader to his own clan.

FERAL HEAT is a brilliant collaboration between Hill and Mason and a wonderful paranormal novel. I for one am looking forward to more from these two.
