True friendship, confrontation and romance interplay as the gardener effects each member of the family in such dramatically different ways. Eventually we learn that the gardener has a mission of his own, one that requires the reemergence of ancient traditions upon which the garden, family and community once thrived. A religion long lost almost entirely to vague recollection spreads itself within the community, reclaiming its position as an integral part of the culture. No one who comes into contact with this energy leaves unchanged. Yet none experience the transformation more than Donald, a social outcast, who under the tutorage of the gardener is brought to the threshold of societal acceptance, only to be offered the chance to reject it all.

The characters and messages in this tale remain with the reader long after the last page has been read, and provides food for thought while shedding light on a fresh way to view the powers the earth behold. Alon Shalev has delivered us a fine first novel.

I grew really connected to the characters; was interested in them and their well-being; missed them when I finished the book. The story is well woven. The descriptions of the gardens are beautiful - like a guided tour. I recommend the book to people who enjoy reading about gardening, a holistic, earth-based approach to life, and a good story.
