I woke up one morning after a two month drunk and knew I had to quit drinking. I had experienced one too many hangovers. This morning was the worst. I called my friend and asked for help. She told me to be ready by 6:00. She was taking me to a meeting. I felt such a sense of relief. But the obsession was greater than my desire to quit. Immediately I went to the store for a beer. If I was going to quit drinking, and today would be my last drink, I needed a drink. This is a perfect example of an alcoholic. Before the meeting I consumed six beers. At 5:30 I panicked. She was on her way and I wanted more alcohol. I ran across the street to my neighbor's to get a beer. His wife had just left for the store to buy more so he had nothing to offer. The entire time I sat in that meeting, I thought about drinking. I planned what I would drink when the meeting was over. In desperation I stayed for the late night meeting. Again, I thought about drinking through that meeting. I was taken home at 10:30 that night. And only by the grace of God, I went to bed. I was done. I have not taken a drink since that day, August 17th, 1999.
