Valery spun around, and the blood drained from his face.
'You!' He gave a strangled cry. 'You left! What are you doing here?' He looked in mounting horror from Lydia’s pale, nervous face to Alex’s, and realised that he had been trapped. Onlookers drifted into the hall as the rumour spread, hungry for the inevitable confrontation.
Alex drew his sword. 'Step away, Lydia,' he said. 'This is between me and Valery now.'
Valery turned on Lydia. 'What lies have you been telling him?' he raged. She backed away in terror, raising her hands as if to shield herself from a blow.
'Leave her alone, Valery. If you’re going to face down anyone, let it be me.' Alex struggled to suppress tears. 'I saw it all. I know what happened in that room, what you did to her, and to our child. You killed my baby, and if you do not draw your sword right now I will cut you down, honour or no honour. Will you fight? Or would you prefer to die where you stand?' Valery hesitated, sword half drawn, and Alex pressed on spitefully. 'Or do you only fight defenceless women, is that it?'
Valery lunged at him, reacting furiously to this last barb. Alex leapt aside. They stood for what seemed like an age, naked swords gleaming red under the torchlight, each weighing the other up.
