Sarah hated being quiet. The grown-ups all said, “Shhh!” holding a finger in front of their lips. There were too many grown-ups in the house and not enough kids. Mom’s quilting club ladies were here today. No time for kids. No room for kids. Sarah sat alone on the back steps.
Down below on the sidewalk, an ant scurried out of his nest. Sarah jumped down the steps, taking two at a time, and crouched over the ant as it crawled along a crack in the cement. She placed her hand in front of him like a wall, but he crept right over it and kept marching on.
“I wonder where he’s going,” she thought. “I’ll follow him and see what I can see.”
