The Killer Basement
The man went down the steps slowly, one by one, that lead to the basement. He stopped for a moment, to adjust his eyes to the darkness of the place, and then raised his hand, looking for the light switch. A light bulb poorly illuminated the room, and the man walked to a corner, where there was a lot of trash, old newspapers, broken chairs, and a whole bunch of stuff that one always saves, even if they're worth nothing.
The shriek of a rat invaded the place, as if the presence of the intruder bothered him, but he continued his way undisturbed, moving a dirty and torn rug that was hanging on the wall. Behind that, there was a small door, approximately four feet, hidden between all the garbage accumulated during years.
He looked around the floor, searching, for a key in a secret hiding place, and got it out. He put the key on the lock that protected the door, and opened it, having to kneel to go in. When he was inside, he turned on another light bulb that was hanging from the ceiling, pulling a cord that was attached to it, and the spacious room he had built, came to life. A comfortable wooden chair, the desk he used to write letters, the small television set on a table and the most impressive thing of all: some shelves on the wall, where he had on top a collection that had taken years and a lot of sacrifices to obtain. A long line of crystal jars, sixteen in total, different colors and with labels adhered to them, outlined the contents and the dates in which he had obtained them. The last of them, that same night. What was inside those jars, was conserved in formaldehyde.
He sat comfortably in his favorite chair, with one of the jars in his hands, contemplating the object that was moving inside the chemical substance.
"I love to see this jar. It was the first of my collection, thus, one of the most valuable. March 18, twenty years ago. It seems like yesterday that everything happened, that cold winter night of my adolescence, when I still thought the world was a nice place to live, even when my parents beat me up every day, just because they felt guilty of their past mistakes."
"I was always the recipient of their anger, because they loved the other one, the one they never met. The one that was my shadow all through my childhood. The one that never allowed me to grow up normally, interfering between my parents and I."
"The bastard that made me swear that someday he was going to pay, together with the bitch that rejected me, and escaped me that March night."
"I can remember that night, when I was outside her house, listening to them making fun of me, talking about how much I bothered her. The bitches didn't care how they were hurting me, how they were destroying my heart. The deception I felt to know that my loved one didn't deserve the tears I had cried for her."
"That's why I entered through the basement door, the one she had said she didn't check, and taking advantage that she had gone to the bathroom for a minute, I stood before her friend, piercing her body with the knife I still have, the one I stole from my father one day at work. It was so much the satisfaction I felt, that I took her beautiful heart, covered with blood, to save and admire for the rest of my life."
"It's a pity that before my sweetheart returned, her friend's younger sister walked down the stairs and I had to kill her so she couldn't tell on me. Unfortunately, Margie saw when I was taking her heart out and escaped to the bathroom, just a few minutes before the house owners returned."
"What do you feel now, Sheila? Were you right to fear me? At the end, I ended up having your pretty heart in this jar and your younger sister's in another."
"You're in hell, next to your sister, and soon your best friend will join you, so you can continue making fun of me, like that tragic night twenty years ago."
"But you must be grateful, Sheila, in that I placed you next to my parents. They can tell you how nice, humble, and quiet I was. Unfortunately, I had to kill them also, to cover my death, which made everyone trust again, except her, the bitch, who always had a feeling that I was alive."
"Too bad that one is missing, the most important, the one that was going to be your daughter in law, the bitch that I fell in love with. The disgusting slut that destroyed my life, and whom soon I'll have in this collection, the most beautiful acquisition that I will exhibit in the heart gallery."
"You will suffer slowly, minute per minute, hour per hour, until you, yourself, ask me to kill you, and before I do that and send you to hell, where you should have never left, I am going to taste you, taking pleasure of every centimeter of your beautiful body, which I haven't allowed any man to touch, because that day, I swore that you would be only mine."
"The moment has come. You hid from me for many years. You changed your name, your appearance, everything, but I knew how to find you, because you made a small mistake: you came back to your place of origin, where everything started, and that's what I was waiting for."
"I knew that the call of the blood was strong, and since I left you without friends, the only ones you could turn to were your parents, that talked too much in their happiness because you had returned, and I heard."
"After that, I just had to follow you to that small town in Massachusetts, and kill your three friends, who protected you, and then wait."
"You ran away again, and hid for years, but I found you in New Haven, thanks to a thing called computers. It's the best invention of the century. That's how I found you, "teacher."
"You have new friends, and one of them is the younger sister of the FBI agent who is chasing me without rest, the stupid bitch that made me kill Mary tonight. But don't worry. You've always believed that I was alive, that everything bad that has occurred around you was my fault, and you're not mistaken. I'm alive! and waiting that delicious moment in which you'll be mine, the moment when you'll know what a man in love is, making love to you. Then, when you're crying and begging me to kill you, I will comply, and I will tear your heart out with all the delicacy that a beauty lover can have."
