Kristina Howells' first novel is a slender volume but a compelling tale of how Kate, a very modern singleton falls for Leon, a beast who preys on women in London's trendiest nightspots. How Kate faces up to Leon's true character and beats him at his game holds the interest, and while some characters could have benefitted from more development, you are rooting for Kate by the novel's surprising end. Howells will be a novelist to watch.
