The third book in a trilogy of Canadian Historical Novels. It is about a family called MacIntosh and the stories are true - from their memoirs. The author adds enough make you feel a part of the family.
The family in previous books (1 and 2)have moved from PEI, to Alberta in Western Canada, then north in that province to the bushland. Now, still in the bushland they finally move to their first homestead where they live through the 'Dirty Thirties' which, according to the young growing up through them, are really not all that 'dirty'!
As they grow up they understand that as part of a large family of thirteen others think of them as 'poor'. They did not know that they were poor. They have all they need and create their own adventures, hilarity, entertainment and work.
Sibling rivalry, neighborly involvement, fears, and excitement are experienced by the and old.

On his pillow was a wide patch of blood and the bedstead was spattered. Beside him lay the rifle while his hand still lay twisted in its trigger mechanism. Suddenly, one leg jerked and an unmistakable moan was heard.
Johnny's head jerked back and terror reached down inside him. "He - he's still alive!" he gasped and backed away. "He's trying to get up!"
