Sandryn's Glow is the first in a series of books set in a world where magic is common place, but some people have an edge, an extra something that gives them more power, more talent, more everything. This extra something is called the Glow. It comes from a mysterious place called the Circle. The world is a peaceful place until one man, Revenant, and one woman, Queen Charon, decide to change the status quo. Queen Charon wants to rule the world. Revenant wants to destroy it.
Saving the world from these two villains becomes Sandryn's job. She doesn't
want to do it, but circumstances don't give her any choice.
A thread of sunshine found its way through Sandryn’s shuttered window. Bits of dust flared briefly as they fell across the path of the sunlight. Sandryn stared at the nothing on the other side of the light and dust.Morning. My birthday morningSandryn’s cold breath clouded the air above her head. With a whispered word of magic the air around her began to warm. Her cloudy breath cleared. She kicked off her blankets and swung her feet over the side of the bed. The floorboards creaked as Sandryn’s spell toasted them.Kitchen noises piled up on the other side of the curtain over Sandryn’s door. Mave was up. Sandryn listened for any other sounds. Nothing. Only Mave. Did she dream her father leaving last night? It hasn’t been a dream for sixteen years. Why should it be any different now? Father’s gone again. He can stay gone this time. I don’t care.Mave pushed past the curtain over Sandryn’s door. “Good morning, love.” She opened the shutters. The room brightened. “It’s bound to storm today.” She turned to Sandryn. “Are you going to keep yourself to bed all day?”Sandryn turned away from Mave and stared a hole into the wall beside her bed.“You’re still upset with your father.”“It’s my birthday.” Sandryn pushed herself off the bed. “He promised.” She moved to the window, kicking at the air as it warmed ahead of her. “I’m so far past upset I don’t even know the word for it. He lied to me.” She closed the shutters Mave had opened. “Again.”“Love, you’re a trial and there’s no doubt.” Mave turned to go. “Breakfast’s in the kitchen. I’ll not be bringing it to you.” She pushed the curtain aside then stopped. “You’d better turn off the heat in here before you burn the house down.” And then she was gone.Sandryn grabbed her clothes from the chest at the end of her bed. She yanked on the long shirt and leggings she usually wore around the house then plopped back on her mattress. She pulled on a pair of soft leather boots from under her bed before she let her magic fade. The chilled air pushed away by the warmth of magic settled back into its place. A shiver passed through Sandryn. The smells of breakfast tugged Sandryn to her door. Her reflection in the full-length mirror hanging next to her door stopped her. The mirror was a gift from her father. He told her young ladies needed to know what they looked like.I know what I look like. She imagined her father standing beside her. You’re short, I’m tall. I’ve got brown hair, you’ve got white. You’ve got that stupid scar cutting your face in half. I don’t. You scare me.

“Our friends are drawing closer,” Revenant said, his voice smooth as silk.
Jarret rode up to Alfar. “Take her to the ferry landing,” he said. “If things go bad swim for it.”
Sandryn resisted Alfar’s gentle tug.
“No,” she said. “You’re not going out there. You’re outnumbered six to one, and I don’t trust him.” She glared at Revenant. The man in black raised an eyebrow and smiled.
“I trust him well enough. And you don’t need to worry about me.” Jarret turned to Alfar. “Now get her out of here.”
“What are you going to do?” She stumbled as Alfar guided her to the ferry; her eyes drowning in unshed tears.
Her father drew his sword. “I’m going to make sure none of them get away.”
